Who Is In Your Bucket?

I am out in NYC right now (let me know if you want to meet up), spending time with peers from all over the world that are pushing the envelope on how much of an impact they can have in the world in all areas of a person’s life. They challenge and inspire me to work harder, execute better, and dream bigger.

Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case for people.

crab-mentality_fullOne of my first mentors Bedros, shared this story with me a couple times. It happened while he was in Oregon on a family vacation. He and his family were on a wharf watching the fishermen fish, and there was a bucket of crabs being used as bait. Bedros was watching as one ambitious crab was climbing over the other crabs looking to escape out of the bucket. Seeing this, Bedros told the fisherman about the situation and the fisherman said, “Oh don’t worry about that, the other crabs will see this and pull the ambitious crab down.” Sure enough just as the crab was getting high enough to make an escape attempt, a handful of crabs clawed their friend back down into the bucket.

How many crabs do you have in your life? How many times have you had a promotion, a dream, a success, a desire to be a better version of your current self, and have been told you are crazy to dream that dream, too old to be able to achieve that goal, or you just got lucky with that promotion. These types of relationships literally suck the life right out of you. They are crabs. I truly believe that the less crabs you have in your life, the happier, healthier, and more fulfilled you will be in your life.

One of my life’s missions is to help people discover their crabs, get rid of them, and then find a group of anti-crabs to live life with.

When people undermine your dreams, predict your doom, or criticize you, remember, they’re telling you their story, not yours. – Cynthia Occelli

As an end note, every once in awhile I put this challenge out and love to hear what you come up with. I challenge you to do a random act of kindness for someone today. This will give you a great feeling of happiness that will make the rest of your day even better!
