Today I am very excited and proud to share with you a story about another great transformation I have been able to witness. Her name is Patty, and she has been coming to Madison Fit Fun Bootcamps since I created it in May, 2008. When I first met Patty she was in pretty poor shape and struggled to complete the workouts. Fast forward a little over a year later and 40 lbs lighter, Patty can be seen as one of the strongest bootcampers and one of the first up the massive hill! Patty is pretty quiet, but she possesses a very strong work ethic (must be from her years of swimming), and a strong internal drive to be the best, which I am really impressed with! I can’t get over how much younger she now looks compared to when she started, the pictures tell it all! Here is Patty’s story in her own words.
“I was a competitive swimmer for 15 years, and when I got to college and avoided the “Freshman 15” I thought I had a handle on my eating habits. What I’ve come to realize is that in college our swim coach would make sure that we were eating healthy whenever we traveled for meets, and because of the intense workouts we did I was able to eat a lot all day long and not gain weight. It took awhile after I graduated college and stopped training, to realize I really didn’t have a handle on my eating habits and I would have to be more conscious about what I ate.
I didn’t work out much after college since I lacked a constant routineI wanted to sleep in. Instead of joining a Masters Swim program, because they’re workouts were at 6am, I tried running and lifting weights after work, but once winter came I lost my motivation. All I wanted to do after work was sit at home and watch TV in the warmth of my apartment. Since I worked out alone I didn’t have anyone counting on me or pushing me to get off the couch, and eventually I stopped working out altogether.
Last May when Madison Fit Fun Bootcamps was getting ready to start, my sister-in-law asked me if I would join with her so we could provide moral support for one another. I said sure before I realized what time the workouts were at. When she finally told me the workouts would start at 6:30am I almost changed my mind. I’m really glad that I didn’t though. After the first 6 weeks I had lost 6 lbs and started to eat healthier.
After completely changing my eating habits and committing to a regular workout routine, I have lost almost 40 lbs since May of 2008. I am in better shape than I remember being in even while I was at the peak of my swim career. While I feel great having lost all the weight I gained after college and the fact that I am able to wear clothes that I haven’t been able to wear in over 5 years, I am most excited about the increase in energy that I have each day and how good I feel after a workout.
I can’t think of a better way to start my day or a better group of people to start it with. I want to thank everyone I work out with for their support; I definitely wouldn’t have been able to make all the progress I have without you.”
