If You Have Never Opened an Email of Mine, Read This…

By | 21 Day Challenge, Behavior Change, Challenge

This might be the most powerful and impactful 2 minute video that I have created.

I filmed it almost exactly 5 years ago for a 21 Day Challenge at the Transformation Center. This concept rocked my world back then. It has continued to be profound for me and has transformed my ability to achieve high levels of confidence, enabling me to tackle some of the biggest challenges of my life over the past few years.

We all want to feel confident, but how do we actually achieve confidence? This framework, revealed to me 5 years ago by my coach, Dan Sullivan, has made such a difference in my own life that I knew I had to share it with you!

Many people believe that in order to have high levels of confidence that they will succeed at something, they need high levels of competency–that they need to have demonstrated the skills that are required to succeed.

For example, I’ve had many conversations over the past week with people interested in the next session of our Killer Kurves program, which starts on Monday. People think that in order to be successful in the program they need to know what exercises are best, what foods are bad, how to prepare healthy foods, meal plans, etc. In some cases, they even think they need to lose some of the weight or get in shape before they start.

While these things might help you build confidence in the long run, there are two other things that are actually much more important (and much more straightforward!), and that will help you build your confidence more quickly.

->-> Click here to discover what these two components are <-<-

This is the simplest and most powerful framework I have ever seen for creating change, getting results and building confidence. Once you have decided on the first two pieces of the framework, everything else will fall into place.

->-> Click here to watch this 2-minute video <-<

After watching the video, I have two questions for you…

Are you committed?

Are you ready to show courage?

You really don’t need to have all the answers, you just have to be willing to start.

If you are ready to start your transformation, reply to this email to let me know.

We have programs that will meet you where you are, whether you are over 50 and looking for small group training with people your own age, or whether you have 40+ pounds to lose and want a supportive environment and an incredible community of people on the same journey, or whether you just want to ramp up your strength and fitness in one of our many Sweat Fit classes.

Let’s make this month an amazing, confidence-filled month for all of us!

Keep moving,

Dustin Maher

PS If you have 40+ pounds to lose and may be interested in our Killer Kurves program, don’t delay! It starts on Monday. Check it out here, then click the “Let’s Talk” button and fill out the form and I’ll be in touch ASAP to see if we are a good fit for you!

How Stephanie dropped 27.6 lbs in 12 Weeks and Went from 0 Pushups to 12

How Stephanie dropped 27.6 lbs in 12 Weeks and Went from 0 Pushups to 12

Today, I want to share with you a story I just received from one of our Killer Kurves participants who just finished her first 12 week session and will be starting a second session next week.

Her story is so common. She lost part of her identity when she became a mom. This is the same thing that many women find who get heavily involved in their career. Finding themselves again is the least selfish thing they can do for their loved ones.

I am so proud of Stephanie and can’t wait to see what the next 12 weeks bring her.

“Before the Transformation Center, I pretty much defined myself as a Mom. Not that that is a bad thing, but I didn’t know who I was outside of being a mom anymore. From the second my daughter was born, she was my main priority. I lost all my baby weight plus more while I was breastfeeding. Then as soon as I went back to work and starting eating normal again it all came back plus some. My daughter turned two at the beginning of February and the only kind of working out I’ve done since she was born has been trying to keep up with her. Granted, chasing a two year old around can be exhausting!

Slowly over the last two years since I’ve had my daughter I started losing myself. If you asked me who I was my first thought would be to answer a mom. I’m much more than a mom but I let myself get consumed in always putting her above everything else including my health and well being. I would opt out of going to events or social functions because I didn’t want to spend time away from her. I work 32-35 hours a week and felt like the times I wasn’t working I needed to be with her.

It took me being away from home on a girl’s getaway to realize how unhappy I was with myself mentally and physically. It wasn’t just about my weight–I was allowing my fears and emotions of being a mom keep me from living a healthier and happier life.

I got home from my vacation and was scrolling through Facebook when an Ad for the Killer Kurves program at the Transformation Center was in my news feed. I commented on the post with a question and within minutes Dustin messaged me asking if we could talk about the program. After we talked, Dustin suggested I look at the website and watch the video and get signed up if I wanted to join. I was excited, scared and nervous all at the same time. The program was starting 4 days later and I didn’t know if I could do it. Walking into the center that day I felt my anxiety kick in. Will everyone be staring at me and see how out of shape and over weight I am? Will I even be able to do the exercises they want me to do? I went and did the exercises, although I can’t say I did them well!

Each week I felt stronger and stronger until I sprained the ligaments in my left foot during a class. I was so upset because I had finally started feeling like I was in the groove and making progress. Part of me wanted to quit because I didn’t know how long I would be limited. I decided I would at least try and go back to class and do whatever exercises I was able to. All the trainers at the TC were wonderful with coming up with different modifications for exercises I couldn’t do. During this time I really had to focus on what I was putting in my body since I wasn’t able to work out as hard.

This program is much more than a workout. It’s a community where everyone supports you and cheers you on. No one judges you or makes you feel unwelcome. After your workout you gather in a group setting and talk about different items each week. From nutrition to emotional eating and to learning how to love yourself the way you are. One of the biggest things I have taken away is that you can’t be perfect with your eating or working out all the time. Sometimes life gets in the way and all you have the option to eat is a cheeseburger. It’s about learning how to make heathier choices and to allow yourself a “cheat” day or meal every once in a while and to be ok with it. Just try and get back on as soon as you ca n! I would suggest this program to anyone who is looking for a judgement free zone with support and guidance on working out and making healthier choices.”

I’ve lost 27.6 Pounds and 16 inches.

Fitness Test week one:
500M Row – 2 minutes 19 seconds
Squats – 50 in 60 seconds
Push Ups to fatigue – 27 on my knees

Fitness Test week 12:
500M Row – 1 minute 56 seconds
Squats – 61 in 60 seconds
Push Ups to fatigue – 12 on my toes with an additional 25 on my knees

Great job Steph! If you can relate to any part of her story and not only want to lose weight (this is just a by-product of living a healthier more active life), but if you want to rediscover who you are and who you want to become, this K2 program is so much more than just an exercise program.

Lessons learned from having my engine blow up on the interstate

By | Body Assessment, Fit Moms for Life Pledge, Health, Killer Kurves, Mindset, Mothers, Uncategorized

This past weekend, I had planned on going home to see my family.  My sister was flying in from Colorado and it was going to be the first time we were all together since my mom’s unexpected death. On my drive from Madison to Minnesota, my car started to act up and it got bad.  I pulled over and my car was smoking and it wouldn’t start.  I got a tow into Tomah and got the news my engine blew up and I would need a new engine.

After everything I have gone through this summer, between my mom and my brother’s stroke, this news didn’t even really phase me.  I just smiled and said, “ok”. At this point, I could have been stubborn and told the garage to fix it no matter the cost. I could have rented a car and drove to Minnesota to see my family and then kept the rental car for the next 10 days while they repaired my car.

CarBut I did something I am trying to do more often when I feel like I could use it… I asked for help. I posted on Facebook asking if anyone had a flat bed trailer or any connections to a local mechanic near where I broke down. I received a message from a guy I have never met but spoke with on the phone and he recommended a mechanic friend that was about 20 miles from me. Next, I called my dad and he hunted down a good used engine to replace mine.  Then, I had to figure out how to get the remaining three hours to MN to see my family.

One of my awesome clients, Karen, just happened to be leaving Madison in the morning and agreed to pick me up on her way and bring me back on Sunday.  I spent Friday night in a little motel that I am pretty sure was rented out by the hour. 🙂

On my way back to Madison, I received a call and a guy had a nice Lexus SUV waiting for me in Sparta, the town where my car was now getting fixed, and I could have the SUV for as many weeks as needed.

The lesson I want to remind you of is, don’t be afraid to ask for help.  Yes, we should be a person that is constantly trying to add to the world and not take away, but sometimes life throws us curveballs and humbly asking for help is the best thing we can do for ourselves AND it also allows others to be blessed by helping out.

Bringing it back to fitness and health, it is ok to admit that you haven’t been successful on your own. You haven’t failed.  You aren’t a bad person.  It just wasn’t the right fit. You might need more structure or community, that’s all! I am here to help if you need it.

If you really want to join one of my training programs in Madison, but can’t quite afford the entire membership investment, we are still taking applications for my mom’s scholarship. ->-> Click here to apply <-<  Send an e-mail to dustinmaherfitness@gmail.com with a little background and your goals and I can recommend a program I think is best for you.

My Mom’s Fitness Scholarship Now Available… Apply Now!

Wow, it has been two months to the day that my mom went to Heaven after suffering a massive brain aneurysm with no warning signs.  She was the healthiest 66 year old I knew which made the loss more painful and shocking.

Here is a picture I will cherish forever, this was taken a couple hours before we took her off life support.  I got to hold my only niece, who for the past 4 months, hadn’t let me hold her. It was hard on my mom to see Ellyanna cry when I tried to hold her and she kept encouraging me to not give up and soon Ellyanna would let me hold and play with her again.  Yes, mom, yes, she did, you got your wish.

As I sat by her in the ICU crying, knowing that in hours she would no longer be with us, I asked myself how can this tragedy bring about some positivity in my mom’s honor? A scholarship for those who can’t afford my programs instantly popped into my head. In the weeks after her death, money poured in from all over the world and we have raised close to $15,000 to help subsidize our memberships at the Transformation Center.

My mom would be so blessed to know that women’s lives are about to be radically transformed in her honor and because of your generosity.

You can read more about the scholarship on the application form but my team will be awarding $300 scholarships for those who show a financial need and a STRONG desire for transformation. This isn’t a free handout, you will still be expected to pay for a part of the membership and be required to show up at least 2X/week.  I don’t want the money many of you generously donated to be wasted.  I take that EXTREMELY serious.

So, if you are READY for transformation and $$$ is the only reason holding you back, you might be a great candidate, so apply today.  They will be given out in the order we receive the applications and limited supplies are available. ->-> Click here to apply.<-<-

Get Fit and Help Support My Little Brother Who Just Had a Stroke

By | Fit Moms for Life Six Week Challenge, Health, Six Week Challenge, Strength, Transformation Center, Uncategorized

I want to first start by thanking each and every one of you who have shown incredible love and support to myself and my entire family over the past several days.  I feel so blessed and loved.  The Joy “Fit Moms” Maher Scholarship has raised over $9,000, which is just amazing along with the over 1,500 fb messages, emails, 150 plus cards, phone calls and texts that we’ve received.  Our family will get through this and you have a lot to do with it.

I can’t wait to start sharing with you more recipes, exercises and mindset information soon, but today isn’t that day.

I have kept it quiet with most everyone but my TC staff and a few close friends and family, but two days after my mom died, my littlest brother Eric, who lives in Madison, woke up without being able to control his eyes.  He was very dizzy, couldn’t walk and in a bad place.

Stroke

That day was spent in the ER where the doctors did many tests, including an MRI, but couldn’t figure out what was going on.  He was sent home and spent the next 3-4 days laying down with his eyes closed.  Miraculously, he was able to stand and function the day of the celebration of life for my mom. He seemed to be on the mend.

Two days ago, I received a call from him that his eyes were bad again and he had numbness and tingling down his left side of his body.  I had to help him walk to the car to take him to the ER. My dad immediately drove from MN to Madison to be with Eric and me.

To make a long story short, they just confirmed with another MRI that he had a stroke in his brain stem. Quite ironic, considering this is similar to what my mom died of.

Fortunately, this one is smaller, and we hope and believe he will make a full recovery.  The doctors (there have been many working on him in both MN and Madison) are shocked and confused why a seemingly healthy 25 year old would have a clot that would reach the brain stem and are definitely concerned as to what caused it.

My brother has been under so much stress and I know he is stressing over the large medical expenses he is racking up.  Fortunately, he has insurance but it is that high deductible kind.

My goal has always been to add 100X more value to your life than I would ever ask in return and I just asked for donations for my mom’s fitness scholarship so I don’t want to ask for donations again.

Instead, I want to offer you my #1 weight loss and lifestyle program, the FM4L 6 Week Challenge for $10 off and 90% of your investment will go directly to pay for his deductible and additional expenses, which I estimate to be at $5,000.

FM4L_Template3

This program has helped people from around the world lose weight, lead a healthier family, get stronger and overcome many health challenges. This program was very near and dear to my mom’s heart, in the early days of the program, she would personally call up each person who ordered it.

My goal over the next three days is to raise the $5,000 and surprise him when he leaves the hospital so that he doesn’t have to worry about the medical bills.

->-> Click here to learn more about the 6 week challenge. <-<-

Enter promo code: ERIC and receive the $10 off.

For those of you who don’t want/need the 6 week challenge but want to help Eric out, I have set up another GoFundMe page (I really hope this is the last one I need to set up) and you can donate there.  Besides the small fee they take, 100% will go to my brother’s medical bills.

->-> Click here to donate at GoFundMe. <-<-

If you are in Madison and decide to donate via GoFundMe, please stop by the TC and grab any workout DVD I might have as a thank you for your generous donation.

Thanks again for being part of my life, please don’t feel sorry for me, or my family. Life can be beautiful and life can be challenging for all of us.  Challenges only make us stronger. I can’t wait to see what the weeks, months, and years have to come for me and for you.

I am humbled…

1 Live CoachingI am humbled and honored by the response to our new live coaching program that leads people through our 6 Week Challenge. I’ve had so many emails telling me how excited you are about this program—how you’ve been waiting for just this kind of support and accountability.

Here’s what some of you have had to say about this video series and our 6 Week Challenge program:

“It is still very early on in the 6 week challenge for me. However, so far there have been some huge changes. The main one is definitely the change in mindset that I have experienced. I really want to treat my body right by eating the right foods and being as active as possible. I also feel that I have been able to help my whole family focus on being even more healthy (nutrition wise). The third biggest success is definitely the confidence I have in my belief about myself. I am also much more mindful of how important I am as a person.”  Daisy

“I absolutely love the program. Reading Dustin’s book has been a joy. To actually see real people doing the same thing has helped because it doesn’t happen over night. It has really helped me control my a1c and allow me to better control my blood sugars with my type one diabetes.” Kathryn

“Thank You” just doesn’t seem sufficient to express the gratitude I feel for the past 6 weeks. The entire FM4L program has far exceeded my expectations!

I think the greatest of the 4 pillars is the Community and it’s the one I am afraid of. When we first talked about it, I felt very alone…my ‘community’ was very small. I am thankful that my accountability group is continuing into the 12-month alumni sessions. It’s not a large number of people; however, Meagan and Beth are so encouraging and truly understand – we keep each other accountable.

I have learned so much in the past 6 weeks, yet it’s not yet a habit. You mentioned that going through a full year of holidays, seasons, celebrations, weather…and learning the program is important.  In looking back at the initial goals and motivation for the 6-week Challenge [it was:] “I want more energy. Doing Weight Watchers has helped me lose weight, but I am still tired a lot.  I don’t feel healthy.” MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!! Thanks to you and your team!

I have received so many blessings from this program. I have returned to ‘myself’ – my body is stronger, I feel amazing, I have energy and a positive attitude!! I have been using the Attitude for Gratitude Journal app on my phone – finding at least 3 positive things to be grateful for each day! This is working, the negative thoughts still come through – and move through more quickly as the positives overshadow! Aaaahhh!  I am proud to be a part of FM4L – I AM a FM4L!! Connie

“Thank you for all you have done for moms, myself included. I am finishing up a 6 week challenge with a group led by Christy Shaffer-Belisle and I have to say that in the beginning I never thought I would enjoy exercising (it was more a “necessary evil”). Since I am seeing results (muscle definition I didn’t know I could develop!), I now try to find ways to fit in the exercises each day.

I have a two and a half year old and a 9 month old, and my two and half year old tries to exercise with me, which is pretty adorable, and an encouragement to me that I am showing her a healthy lifestyle at a young age. My 9 month old thinks it is pretty hilarious when I use the exercise ball, so at least I am providing entertainment while I get in shape. 🙂

Still working on improving my eating habits, but my husband has started reading food labels with me and seems willing to change eating habits alongside me, so that is a great bonus! (He actually told me to throw out something a few weeks ago that he usually enjoys eating, because he read the ingredients label and was slightly appalled at all the chemicals). 🙂

Thanks again for starting Fit Moms for Life! I hope to share it with others! Emily

“I got your email and I know it is a mass email but somehow it always feels personal.  You made me reminisce over this last year since I am only 2 weeks short of my one year anniversary of doing your program.  I am choosing to measure my success in these moments rather than pound or inches (which I have lost a whole lot of!!!!).   I smile all the time.

  • I have tons of energy and play with my kids.
  • I do your work outs religiously 3-4 times a week for the last 12 months.
  • I out plank girls in their 20s from work.
  • I won the limbo contest at the roller rink.
  • I entered a spartan race that I am doing in August (let me assure you, I would never have had the guts to do this.  Not sure I can complete it but I can try).
  • I wore a bikini and was proud.
  • I wear clothes I wore 15 years ago.
  • I can see myself again as how I remember.

I am not perfect by any means.  I still eat too much sugar and carbohydrates. I still want to lose these last 10 awful pounds, and I still want to be more agile/fast on my feet so to speak but I AM SO HAPPY with myself.   Thanks for giving me the tools to change my life, Beth

Your questions answered…

I’m still blown away by your great questions, comments, etc. I thought I’d take a minute to answer some of the most common questions I’ve been getting.

When will the live coaching calls start?

The live coaching group will meet on Tuesdays, starting on May 19.  Emily will reach out to participants to set a time for the calls that works for the greatest number of people.

What will the coaching be like and how will it help me succeed?

We are purposely limiting the size of this coaching group so that Emily can give individual attention to everyone who signs up.  She will be asking you about your goals for the program and how she can best help you, so it may look a little different for everyone.

At a minimum, there will be weekly group calls, regular email/text check-ins, food journal review, etc.  Our goal is to give you the tools and the accountability to help you really make the most of the program over the next 6 weeks and get on track for life.

I am very out of shape and nervous to try an exercise program. I have seen infomercials for workouts that seem really hard.  I am afraid of hurting myself.  Will this program work for someone who has considerable weight to lose and hasn’t exercised in over a decade?

Yes!  Having worked with so many people, we have perfected the art of creating workouts that are gentle enough for the beginner yet challenging enough for the avid exerciser.  The secret is in variable resistance, and exercise modification and progression.  We have people needing to lose 200 lbs doing the workouts.

What equipment will I need for the workouts?

Two workouts are body weight only.  The others only require a set of hand weights (8-15 lbs) and a stability ball (55cm-65cm).

Little Known Product Reduces Joint Pain and Grows Hair and Nails

By | Health, Hydrolyzed Gelatin, Kids nutrition, Nutrition, Uncategorized

Do you suffer from knee, back, ankle, foot, or anywhere-else joint pain? Do you find yourself craving sugar and being hungry all the time? Do your nails break easily? Does your hair split and thin more readily than it used to? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then keep reading.

There is a little known protein powder on the market that has some really unique properties and that has been getting some pretty amazing results for my clients. Just look at what a handful of Amazon users have written in the past couple of days about this mystery powder. “By sheer accident I came upon this product when I was on another blog. Checked out on Amazon to see reviews. Very positive so I ordered it. Love this product. My hair is healthier, my nails stronger and I finally feel relief from joint pain. I am 55 years old and nothing else has worked. The slight appetite suppress is just another plus. Pure quality.”

-Linda

“I’ve been using this product for exactly one week and I can already tell the difference in my big toe joints where I suffer from osteoarthritis. Typically, I’d pop 2 Aleve EVERY morning to minimize the joint pain. I’ve not taken any in a week! The product is operating as advertised and I encourage folks to use this product if they are suffering joint pain and discomfort. It works!”

-Harold

“FINALLY a clean protein that doesn’t bother any of my allergies! The best protein i have found, and i have been looking for years. if you have issues with cow dairy and soy, it can be very tough to get a quality protein powder. sure, there are rice and pea and hemp… they just weren’t very effective for me. until i found this, the best i could find for my system was hemp protein. This stuff is amazing. no taste, dissolves quickly in cold. Can be used in hot, too. Because there is no taste, you can put it in anything. Feel like hot tea with lemon and honey in the morning? Toss some protein in there. An additional benefit of this protein is that your nails and hair will get noticeably stronger and in better condition.”

-Linda

“Life changing. I have suffered on and off from planar fasciitis. My pain is gone when I take it. I also suffered from SPD my last pregnancy and after giving birth it helped restore me back to normal faster. Added bonus is my hair is thicker and very shiny, and my nails grow fast and strong.”

-Kelly

“I started taking this last year when I noticed I was having “cracking” in all my joints, even the joints in my sternum area when I would stretch-uncomfortable & weird! I am only 37, so too soon for this to be happening! I researched products and decided to try it. I read the reviews on it & have to agree this product is great. I have no more cracking in my knees, shoulders, anywhere! I typically just pour a fair amount into my morning coffee. I would definitely recommend buy this if you are having any joint issues regardless of age. It definitely helps! Another bonus is it lasts a very long time. I can get a container of this to last around 4-5 months minimum and that’s even with my daily generous usage. Also, it does not affect the taste of whatever you may drinking & is supposed to have skin benefits as well!”

-Jen

Ok…

I could go on and on. I have about 1,000 more of these just like this, but I think you get the point. What is this mystery powder? Stay tuned as I will reveal what it is, but even more exciting than that, I have a big announcement to go along with it.

Why losing weight and keeping it off is SO hard (Hint: It’s in your genetics)

By | Fit Moms for Life Pledge, Fit Moms for Life Six Week Challenge, Health, Mindset, Mothers, Nutrition, Six Week Challenge, Uncategorized

Who is your most challenging client to get results for? This is a question I occasionally get asked, and for me, the answer is simple. It is the client with an unsupportive spouse (hardest) or unsupportive family, friends, or coworkers. Basically, the client with the most unhealthy social circle has the hardest time getting the results they want.

Why?

Because the moment you start losing weight, feeling better, becoming happier, is the same moment your social circle may become envious, jealous, and uncomfortable. Your success forces them to put a mirror up to their own faces and come to grips with the fact that they themselves might NOT be healthy, fit, and/or happy. In turn, they may start self-sabotaging you in the hopes that you will become the old you – the friend/co-worker/spouse that doesn’t bring them discomfort. OR, they may just start to not invite you to social gatherings as a way of punishing you for not fitting their mold anymore.

Fear of rejection from loved ones is one of the biggest fears we face and this fear is why we continually go back to our comfortable state with our same group of friends (and even why some people go back into an abusive relationship). This fear of rejection is actually a biological fear and was very important to our survival a long time ago.

Let me explain…

Way back when, in the cave man (and beyond) days, we had constant threats surrounding us- from predators, the weather, famine etc. Scientists believe that we became “social” because it was the only way for us to survive long term.

The following excerpt is from the book Art of War, by Sun Tzu…

“Humans evolved over the last few million years in a world filled with risks like large predators and starvation… early humans were probably commonly hunted by a wealth of large predators. One common defense to predation displayed by primates and other animals is to live in groups. The advantages of living in a group probably are the reason why early humans and other large primates evolved to be social, and why we are still social today. Failure to be a part of the social group, getting kicked out, probably spelled doom for early humans.

Anything that threatens our status in our social group, like the threat of ostracism, feels like a very great risk to us. Ostracism appears to occur in all social animals that have been observed in nature,’ said Kip Williams, a professor of psychological sciences at Purdue who has studied ostracism. ‘To my knowledge, in the animal kingdom, ostracism is not only a form of social death, it also results in death. The animal is unable to protect itself against predators, cannot garner enough food, etc., and usually dies within a short period of time,’ said Williams.”

We fear failure because we fear being kicked out of our social group. So how do we overcome this deeply seeded biological fear? The key is to begin to surround yourself with a new group of people that are currently living out the habits that you want to adopt. In time, you will connect with these people and friendships will develop. This way, you don’t have to fully leave some of the other friends you have had for many decades. Although you may find yourself identifying less with these old friends as time goes on and consequently spending less time with them.

Without your new circle of friends, this would be devastating, but since you have this new group to connect with, it won’t feel like you are out on your own. I believe adopting a new supportive community is the best, and almost only way, to lose weight, become healthy, and maintain that health long term.

For 2015, my team at the Transformation Center came up with the slogan: “Drop your gym and join our community.” This is not to say that gyms are bad or completely ineffective, just that our team at the Transformation Center prides itself on doing a much better job at creating and supporting community building within our walls.

Only 20% of America has a gym membership, yet I would estimate at least 90% of the population need guidance and support in making regular exercise and nutrition part of their daily lives. If you live near Madison and aren’t part of our community yet, I would like to invite you to join us. For those of you who can’t be with us in person, we have taken the best of what we do in Madison and packaged it up into a life transforming 6-week program that includes online support. We have about 110 challenge groups around the country that meet in homes, schools and churches. You can join an existing group or start your own and get paid to be part of an incredibly supportive community.

I know how hard it can be to change the type of people you associate with. I have had to do this myself on a couple of occasions. It isn’t easy, but it is totally worth it. After looking at the thousands of clients I have personally trained, nearly 100% have at some level embraced our community and invested their time and energy into developing friendships. When your social circle is fit and healthy, the last thing you want to do is skip workouts or consistently eat unhealthy because this behavior may lead to being ostracized, and as far as our human evolution is concerned, that is dangerous to your well being.

Why Friends Sabotage Your Success and What To Do About It

By | Balance, Behavior Change, Challenge, Health, Mindset, Nutrition, Uncategorized

Does it ever feel like every time you gain momentum and start to make progress in a program, some of your friends and family start to sabotage your efforts? You are not alone and this is one of the huge reasons why it can be tough to stick with a program.

Here’s how it usually goes. You are doing great. You are in the right mindset now—you believe that change is possible and that you are worth the effort. You understand your BIG WHY and use that to keep yourself motivated every day.  You eliminated the foods that are making you fat and started eating the foods that will keep your body in fat-burning mode. You changed up your exercise routine and, while you are actually spending less time exercising, you are stronger, have more energy and you feel better.

You’ve been at it for 6 weeks and inches are dropping and your clothes fit better. You are excited and want to tell people about your success. But slowly, some of your friends who were excited for you in the beginning are starting to pull back. They may tell you that you look too skinny. Or they may give you a hard time if you want to drink water instead of alcohol or soda. Maybe you hear that you are no fun if you don’t want to go out drinking. Some may say, “We want the old you back—what happened to the fun Sarah?”

People naturally resist change, especially if it highlights the unhealthy choices that they themselves are still making. Your success draws attention to their own failures. The people, the environment, and the community that you have around you are huge indicators of whether you will succeed or fail in the long run–together, they make up my fourth pillar of success. Because despite your best efforts, it is incredibly difficult to maintain progress when everything and everyone around you is conspiring (often unknowingly) to hold you back.

Part of the solution is to have a serious talk. Share with them why you want to make these changes in your life and ask them to support you in that. If they are unwilling to support you, you may have to distance yourself or step back from that relationship. Part of the solution may be to cultivate new friendships and relationships with others who share your values and who can support you on your journey.

We started Fit Moms for Life to make it easier for people to find and create those communities of support. We have over 100 local groups around North America now, and new groups are forming every week. We would love to have you join us! LizzyToday I want to share with you the story of Liz—an amazing woman who joined my Fit Moms class years ago and is now one of my trainers and an incredible inspiration to all who know her.

When Liz first came to my class, she was very overweight, but she made the commitment to herself to keep showing up. Once she started moving, she got stronger and started to feel better, which kept her coming back.

Eventually, she lost over 80 pounds and is now in incredible shape. Click here to read more about her transformation.

Liz’s story highlights my third pillar of success—get moving! Once you start exercising effectively, you will feel better, sleep better and have more energy. The feeling you get from exercise can give you the motivation to make—and stick with—other changes in your life.

Try it out yourself—get moving today!
