If You Have Never Opened an Email of Mine, Read This…

This might be the most powerful and impactful 2 minute video that I have created.

I filmed it almost exactly 5 years ago for a 21 Day Challenge at the Transformation Center. This concept rocked my world back then. It has continued to be profound for me and has transformed my ability to achieve high levels of confidence, enabling me to tackle some of the biggest challenges of my life over the past few years.

We all want to feel confident, but how do we actually achieve confidence? This framework, revealed to me 5 years ago by my coach, Dan Sullivan, has made such a difference in my own life that I knew I had to share it with you!

Many people believe that in order to have high levels of confidence that they will succeed at something, they need high levels of competency–that they need to have demonstrated the skills that are required to succeed.

For example, I’ve had many conversations over the past week with people interested in the next session of our Killer Kurves program, which starts on Monday. People think that in order to be successful in the program they need to know what exercises are best, what foods are bad, how to prepare healthy foods, meal plans, etc. In some cases, they even think they need to lose some of the weight or get in shape before they start.

While these things might help you build confidence in the long run, there are two other things that are actually much more important (and much more straightforward!), and that will help you build your confidence more quickly.

This is the simplest and most powerful framework I have ever seen for creating change, getting results and building confidence. Once you have decided on the first two pieces of the framework, everything else will fall into place.

Let’s talk about injuries

Injury isn’t a topic that is sexy or exciting to talk about, but it is pretty much inevitable. Most injuries happen just going about life, and on a rare occasion it can happen while working out. I would estimate it’s less than 10% of the time related to working out, at least here at the Transformation Center.

It can be very frustrating, especially for those new to exercise, when they have an exercise related injury. I have seen many throw in the towel way too soon and give up, thinking that exercise just isn’t right for them.

Let me share a personal story.

This weekend I am heading to the Twin Cities to run a marathon. I signed up a couple weeks ago after my poor performance at Ironman.

If I were to have run this marathon around the time of Ironman, I was in good enough run shape to qualify for Boston. Not saying I would have, but saying I had the fitness to get there.

Now, I have been sick for a few weeks, and it’s been 5 weeks since I have done a long run, so I don’t expect a very fast run.

But…

It was only 4 years ago that I first gave running a shot. Many of you know the story, but I had only run a mile or more 2-3 times in my life and hated it.

I hired a coach, and committed to slowly building my miles up.

That first year of running was anything but smooth!

I developed 4 separate injuries from running… two foot issues, one achilles, and one knee/quad injury.

During these setbacks my mind kept saying, “See Dustin, you aren’t meant to be a runner.” There were so many times I wanted to quit.

But I had a bigger goal, finish my first Ironman.

So I would take it easy, modify, focus on foam rolling/stretching and eventually the injury would heal, and then another would pop up.

5 Ironmans later, multiple marathons, and over 30 additional shorter races, and I have only experienced a couple small niggles since that first year.

If I would have given up so soon, and looked at the injuries as a sign to give up trying, then I wouldn’t have had some of the most amazing experiences of my life.

Today’s message isn’t about running, it’s about understanding that you will probably get injured at some point. You might need to slow down or modify, but it doesn’t mean you need to completely stop everything.

At the Transformation Center, we have had clients who have broken a foot or maybe a wrist, or suffered some other kind of injury, but they have come back right away in a boot or cast. Even though they can’t do everything, they can still do something… and something is always better than nothing.

I Thought I Was Getting Early Onset Parkinsons…

This was sent out to my client newsletter but I thought I would share in hopes it can help at least one person.

I have been writing this newsletter for over 11 years now.  I would estimate I am at at least 1200 newsletters over those years.

My goal in writing is to share what is working right now in the world of health, nutrition, and fitness along with sharing lessons I have been learning through the peaks and valleys of my life.

In other words the good and the bad.

I regularly receive emails or people mention in person that they appreciate my openness and vulnerability.  I do my best to be an open book. Sometimes this gets me in trouble and my wife or staff (who pre-screen my newsletters) tell me to back off and not be quite so open and honest.  🙂

So, I would like to share a little story with you and then a couple of lessons I hope you can learn from that you can apply to your own life.

Here is the vulnerability part…

The past two months have been some of the toughest months I have experienced in the 13 years I have had the Transformation Center.

As the TC has grown to a staff of over 18 and over 120 sessions a week, the pressure to continue to grow, or even maintain, is so much harder than when it was small.

It seems like every person I have talked to recently who says they are interested in the TC and getting in shape has come up with reasons why now isn’t a good time to start.

And then, just by chance, we have had a record number of current clients leave because they have moved away, slipped on their driveway and gotten injured, traveled out of town to take care of their sick parents or a dozen other reasons.

Our average, the number of sessions per week our clients attend has dropped below 2x/week for the first time that I can remember.  Now, I would guess the average gym has a rate that is somewhere between 0.3-0.5 which is so sad, but we normally average just below 3X/week, which is pretty much as high as you will see anywhere in the country.

Then we have had a bunch of leaking problems on the roof with ice build up, which has caused me to spend hours at a time shoveling thousands of pounds of snow off the roof to reduce the amount of ice build up and flooding.  I am all about a good workout but that is a whole other level.

So, the stress (and poor sleep because of the stress) must have caught up with me about a week ago and I experienced something I have never had before.

My thumbs on both hands started to shake uncontrollably.  

When it started to happen I didn’t think too much of it, and tried to figure out what it was.  Maybe I was dehydrated or had low blood sugar. I figured once I corrected that it would go away.

Well it didn’t.

It was so bad that I could barely text on my phone, and I only could if I pinned both wrists to my belly for support.

Then you go down the internet diagnosis rabbit hole and of course the two really scary ones are Parkinson’s and ALS (which my grandpa, who I never met, died from at a very young age).

There were, of course, other less serious diagnoses or causes and one was stress.

Anyways, after about 3 long days of uncontrollable shaking, it started to improve and at the time of writing this, it is pretty much gone and I hope to never experience it again.

So why am I sharing this with you?

We all go through challenges and struggles in life and it’s how we get through them that dictates our experience of life.

About 8 years ago, I made a conscious effort to take radical responsibility in my life.  If something happened to me I would blame no one but myself.

So in my case above, I haven’t done my part to attract the right people to the Transformation Center over the past couple months. Myself and the rest of our team will come up with even more new ideas to keep our long term clients engaged and pumped to come to each and every session.

I have created a plan to change this course, so I don’t ever have to go through this stress and pain again.  I need to take 100% responsibility.

How have I tried to handle this stress?

The three biggest things that I have done to help me over the past couple months are the following.

  • Working out: I have stayed so consistent with this one, and when I am exercising all my problems feel like they go away for the time that I am working out.  I feel better afterwards, and I believe it gives me a clearer head to see what I need to do to fix things.
  • Leaned on relationships:  My wife Tessa was really the only person who knew about the shaking and the high amount of stress I was/am feeling and she has been my rock during this shaky time.
  • Faith: I have specific Bible verses that give me hope and comfort that things are going to be ok.

If I didn’t have those three things going for me, I feel like I would be in a much worse situation without a path towards improvement.

I hope these tips can help you if/when you find yourself in high stress times in your life.  There are so many great ways to help cope, but these are a few that have helped me.

I haven’t shared this with you to make you feel sorry for me in any way, so please don’t.  There are so many people in our community and the world dealing with much more serious challenges.

This Doesn’t Make Sense

I have been having some great conversations with clients over the past few days, and many have come back after some inconsistency.

For example, one awesome woman in our Fit over 50 program has been taking care of her aging mom every evening and hasn’t been coming very consistently, like she had for the past year or two.  She was here today and said she was reminded of just how much she liked it and good you feel when you are done with the workout.

She also said how hard it is to come back once you haven’t been in the groove, and how easy it is to come when you are in the groove.

I thought about that and it is so true in my own life.  Let me share a real life personal example.

I am known to share most everything publicly, and I feed off that and use it as motivation and accountability.  Well, last October I did something I don’t normally do and kept a secret, my own personal project.

I hired a running coach with the goal to become a far better runner than I currently was.  So my coach and I devised a plan to run 50-60 miles a week, something that seemed outrageous to me at first, even compared to training for Ironman the past 3 years.  I spent the first 5 weeks building from 42 miles up to 50 and then I have stayed around the 50-60 mile mark ever since.

I have had zero sickness and only a couple days of some achilles soreness.

In case you are wondering, that is around 8 miles M/T/W/Th/F and then 12 on Saturday and 0-6 on Sunday.

Only about 4 people knew about this until a week ago, when I shared it in a newsletter.

I have been getting asked if it has been hard to run basically 8 miles every day.

My answer has even surprised me… no

It’s not because I am some superstar or have any special powers.

It is because I have spent the past 4 months doing it every single day.  I have only missed a few days in the past 120 days.

In other words, the more frequently I run, the easier it becomes to just do it.  I don’t get sore, I don’t get especially tired (unless it is interval day), and I don’t really have to give myself a pep talk.  It’s just like brushing my teeth or taking a shower. It has become who I am, and I will always find the time to do things that align with who I am.

It was much harder to run 3x/week around 5-7 miles each time, like I have for the past few years, because it wasn’t as consistent.

Now there is something that, for me, is going to require a lot of motivation and pep talk to accomplish…

Swimming.

It’s been 5 months since I got into a pool or a lake and I am about to start back up swimming in a few weeks.

What is my point to all this?

I am starting to believe that the thesis of one of the most popular fitness books of all time, Younger Next Year, is correct for every single one of us.  The authors say that you should exercise every day like it is your job, the most important job you have. They were referring to a person 50 and older, but I think it can and does apply to all of us.

Not only will this keep you healthier, it will make it easier to keep as a routine.

Yes, it is a bit paradoxical, but the more frequently you exercise (or do anything for that matter), the easier it becomes.  

Said another way…

The less frequently you exercise, the harder it will be to be consistent.

Without making this any more lengthy, I am not saying you should work out 5-7 days a week at maximum intensity.  That is a recipe for overuse injury.

Find ways to sweat most days of the week and just see how much better you feel.

PS Now this concept could be taken too far and if you are working out many hours each day, it can lead to burnout and overtraining, which then makes it harder to want to train.  I am talking about consistency, but varied intensity and duration levels.

PPS Does the concept of exercising or moving most days of the week overwhelm you?  The good news is that you don’t have to start with that. Just start with a couple days a week and build up to it.  Reply to this email if you want help doing that.

Single mom ready to end it all, chooses life

I knew Onica was a special person the day I met her. I only had about 20 minutes to get to know her, but I could see deep hurt within her and yet I also sensed she was a strong, determined woman that was ready to give it her all.

Fast forward about two months and I was sitting at the Transformation Center going through my e-mail when I received the testimonial you are about to read. The crazy thing about reading this e-mail that night was that Onica was standing about 15 feet in front of me, waiting for her Killer Kurves class to start. Take it away Onica….!

My name is Onica and I have struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. I have gained and lost and lost and gained more times than I care to count. In high chool my diet of choice was Anorexia, I would eat nothing all day and then have just enough dinner so that my parents wouldn’t notice something was off. I kept the weight off until I was 25 and went from jobs where I stood all day and rarely ate breakfast or lunch to a desk job where it seemed like someone wanted to take everyone out to lunch daily. The pounds piled on quickly after that. I had my son at 26 and never lost the baby weight. Two years later I had my daughter and 6 weeks after she was born I joined a weight loss program. I did great and was 7 pounds from my goal when self destruction kicked in. We had recently moved an hour away from our hometown and I knew no one, I was a stay at home mom and it was winter. I learned that I love to bake and more than that I loved to eat what I baked. Again, the pounds piled on, I was more than I had ever weighed, even when I was pregnant.

Fast forward 2 more years, I was now a divorced, single mom trying to make ends meet. It wasn’t easy to say the least. Every small bump in my life made me feel like I was sinking deeper and deeper into a pit that I was never going to be able to claw my way out of. I felt that every single aspect of my life was just too much for me to handle, that nothing I did was good enough, or could possibly be worth anything to anyone, that my kids would be better off if I weren’t around. What kind of a role model was I for them? Wouldn’t it just be better for them if they didn’t grow up with a mom like me, someone who never had any time or energy for them, whose house wasn’t spic and span and who was fat? I had a plan to end it all, I didn’t have a time frame, but I had a plan. It would have appeared to have been an accident so that my ex would still get the life insurance to use for raising the kids and above all no one else would be injured and my kids wouldn’t be the ones to find me. I had a plan.

Then on September 5th an email came into my inbox from Dustin. It was about a 21 day clean eating challenge. My sister told me that she and her husband were going to take the challenge and that I should do it with them. I decided to go for it. Part of that was to meet with Dustin in person to discuss your weight loss challenges and goals etc. That day changed my life, more accurately, that day saved my life. After I gave a short run down on my weight history Dustin told me about his Killer Kurves program, I didn’t think there was any way I could make it work for me financially or with my schedule so I tried to just forget about it. However it seemed that nothing would make the thought of this program leave my head. It sounded so perfect for me. After several days of not being able to stop thinking about it I rearranged my schedule with my kids, worked out a financial plan and I signed up. I can honestly say that signing up for K2 was the best decision I have ever made for myself.

On our first night I was nervous but excited. Everyone there seemed to be in the same boat. The trainers were very friendly and accommodating to everyone’s fitness level and any physical limitations we had. The people were all super friendly and no one was judging anyone else. As the weeks have gone on we have formed a bond with each other, the support and encouragement is like nothing else I have ever experienced. We have turned into a family of sorts and I love it, I can’t imagine my life without K2 now.

One of the things that I have learned to do is to view food as fuel for my body and not a hobby or way to relieve stress. I won’t put a certain brand of gasoline in my car because it gets terrible gas mileage with it so why did I continue to put food in my body that was terrible for my health and energy? It has really changed the way I look at eating.

We are currently starting our 9th week of the 12 week program and I have lost 29.2 pounds and 14 inches. My self esteem is on the way back up and the pride in myself that I feel is amazing! The little things no longer throw me to the bottom of the pit and I am smiling more than I have in years. I’m not where I want to be yet but I am a whole lot closer and more importantly I now have the support, knowledge, and confidence in myself to keep going towards that goal and not to just give up because of a setback or hard day.

If there is anyone out there that is on the fence about joining Killer Kurves, I say do whatever it takes to make it happen! You will not be disappointed. I know I’m not. Your life will never be the same again.

Are you Desperate, Embarrassed, Fed Up, Frustrated, Overwhelmed, or Feel Like You Want to Give Up Trying?

We would probably describe the above emotions as “negative” emotions and in one way I would agree.

These feelings suck and are what we don’t want to feel.

But…

I think these emotions can also be the best thing to ever happen to a person.

Why?

It is through this pain that we can decide right then and there that we are done living in the state we are living in and are ready to make a change.

Not just “try” but actually commit and “do.”

Now in the fitness world, many unfortunately prey on the desperation of people and offer late night infomercials, pills or creams that are guaranteed to melt fat away, or some prepackaged meals that sound like they will solve all their problems. But these “solutions” are pretty much BS or solve only 5% of the problem.

That is why I am excited when someone comes to me “desperate” because I know they have what it takes–they are ready–to create a life-changing transformation.

A transformation their friends, family, and coworkers can’t stop talking about.

I know what we offer at the Transformation Center is the real deal. It is 100% of the puzzle, not just 5%, as long as someone is ready to make the change.

If you have been following my journey over the past 13 years, you will find that I have hardly changed my strategies and beliefs in terms of how I help people get in shape.

In other words, I haven’t fallen for all the trends, gimmicks and fads.

As my friend Jamie Eason says, “the secret is there are no real secrets.”

It has and always will come down to the following formula for just about everyone.

  1. Mindset: Believe that you need to take care of yourself, if you are going to be able to be there for others. Believe that success is more than possible, no matter how many times you have failed before. Believe that you are worth the effort.
  2. Nutrition: Eat real food. The % of macros or even the number of calories to a certain degree is less important than just eating real food most of the time.
  3. Fitness: Exercise most days of the week with 2-3 days of strength training, a couple sessions of interval cardio and the rest steady state cardio. Move more throughout the day, every day. Doesn’t have to be intense all the time, but aim for less sitting and more moving.
  4. Community: Surround yourself with people who are fitter than you, who have already established the habits you wish to adopt. If you don’t have this, it makes it much more challenging to have lasting change.

There you have it. The not so secret secrets.

Executing this is, of course, the more challenging part and is what we strive to do at the Transformation Center and in our online program, Fit Moms for Life.

So remember, desperation isn’t bad, it can be the flammable ingredient to igniting your success.

Maybe you aren’t desperate yet but don’t want to get to that point before you take action. Desperation isn’t a requirement.

Cathy loses husband and purpose but finds it at the TC and drops 40 lbs

I pinch myself every day to have the opportunity to meet and hang around incredible humans who overcome so many obstacles.

I hope you will be inspired by Cathy’s story.

The one thing I want to point out from her story is that when she started, she could barely get to the ground or back up without help, but because we have incredible trainers here we are able to meet someone where they are and take them to where they want to be.

Here is Cathy in her own words:

January 2018 I was lost in my life. I lost my husband Mike to brain cancer June 23, 2017. Due to the stress over Mike’s illness and death I had gained all the weight that had taken me a year and a half to lose. I had knee surgery in December I needed to find a purpose in my life.  End of February I joined the Transformation Center and the 1 pm Fit over 50 small group personal training session.

I will not forget that first day when Dustin was there to help me get to the floor and show me how to get up. I still can’t believe how bad I really was that day. I could have given up but there was something about being there that helped me keep going.

I set a goal to be under 200 for my 60th birthday.  I missed my first goal by a week, but I did it. My next goal is to ride my bike in The Ride (to raise money for the UW Carbone Cancer Research Center) in honor of my husband Mike. The Ride is coming up this Sunday. I will do my best. A year ago I was 40 pounds heavier than I am today.

My final goal is to keep working out and to keep dropping weight and getting stronger, both physically and mentally.  I enjoy working out at the Transformation Center.

Erin has worked with me to get me to where I am today. He worked around my injuries and surgeries.  I get stronger every day and I am working towards getting strong enough to join the Killer Kurves group to prove to myself I can do it. I have 40 more pounds to hit my final weight goal but more importantly is for me to get stronger, and I know with the help of everyone at the Transformation Center I will meet that goal.

Lessons learned from having my engine blow up on the interstate

This past weekend, I had planned on going home to see my family.  My sister was flying in from Colorado and it was going to be the first time we were all together since my mom’s unexpected death. On my drive from Madison to Minnesota, my car started to act up and it got bad.  I pulled over and my car was smoking and it wouldn’t start.  I got a tow into Tomah and got the news my engine blew up and I would need a new engine.

After everything I have gone through this summer, between my mom and my brother’s stroke, this news didn’t even really phase me.  I just smiled and said, “ok”. At this point, I could have been stubborn and told the garage to fix it no matter the cost. I could have rented a car and drove to Minnesota to see my family and then kept the rental car for the next 10 days while they repaired my car.

CarBut I did something I am trying to do more often when I feel like I could use it… I asked for help. I posted on Facebook asking if anyone had a flat bed trailer or any connections to a local mechanic near where I broke down. I received a message from a guy I have never met but spoke with on the phone and he recommended a mechanic friend that was about 20 miles from me. Next, I called my dad and he hunted down a good used engine to replace mine.  Then, I had to figure out how to get the remaining three hours to MN to see my family.

One of my awesome clients, Karen, just happened to be leaving Madison in the morning and agreed to pick me up on her way and bring me back on Sunday.  I spent Friday night in a little motel that I am pretty sure was rented out by the hour. 🙂

On my way back to Madison, I received a call and a guy had a nice Lexus SUV waiting for me in Sparta, the town where my car was now getting fixed, and I could have the SUV for as many weeks as needed.

The lesson I want to remind you of is, don’t be afraid to ask for help.  Yes, we should be a person that is constantly trying to add to the world and not take away, but sometimes life throws us curveballs and humbly asking for help is the best thing we can do for ourselves AND it also allows others to be blessed by helping out.

Bringing it back to fitness and health, it is ok to admit that you haven’t been successful on your own. You haven’t failed.  You aren’t a bad person.  It just wasn’t the right fit. You might need more structure or community, that’s all! I am here to help if you need it.

My Mom’s Fitness Scholarship Now Available… Apply Now!

Wow, it has been two months to the day that my mom went to Heaven after suffering a massive brain aneurysm with no warning signs.  She was the healthiest 66 year old I knew which made the loss more painful and shocking.  

Here is a picture I will cherish forever, this was taken a couple hours before we took her off life support.  I got to hold my only niece, who for the past 4 months, hadn’t let me hold her. It was hard on my mom to see Ellyanna cry when I tried to hold her and she kept encouraging me to not give up and soon Ellyanna would let me hold and play with her again.  Yes, mom, yes, she did, you got your wish.
 
As I sat by her in the ICU crying, knowing that in hours she would no longer be with us, I asked myself how can this tragedy bring about some positivity in my mom’s honor? A scholarship for those who can’t afford my programs instantly popped into my head. I Conquered My Fear Of Water And Swimming…

This past weekend, I decided to go out and conquer my fear of water and swimming. One year from now, I will need to efficiently swim 2.4 miles for Ironman.  I have never been able to make it further than down and back at a pool, and haven’t treaded water for more than 2 minutes. That is why attempting to swim across Devil’s Lake, 1.2 miles terrified me.

With the support of a SUP that stayed near me. I was able to make it all the way across in a very slow and inefficient 71 minutes and only threw up 4 times during the swim.  I was unable to front crawl, so I spent the entire time laying on my back, flopping. I will probably use a few different swim coaches for the next year because I know this swim will probably be one of my hardest challenges.
 
The other day, I was sitting in my office at the Transformation Center working and eavesdropping on a handful of women in their 60s who had just finished their workout. The one woman was telling the other ladies about her epic hiking trips out to the mountains. The other ladies were inspired and they began to talk about possibly doing a trip either together or with others, and starting off with a smaller hike because of the confidence they have been getting through our Fit over 60 training program.
 
This made me think of my mom, and three years ago, she agreed to hike a 14,000 plus foot mountain in Colorado because it was what her kids wanted to do. This was the furthest thing from her comfort zone or personal desire. My mom did make it to the top having given every ounce of her energy and strength.  Seeing my mom climbing hands and feet at the top and saying, “only for you kids,” is a memory I will always cherish and it brings tears to my eyes every time I think about it.
 
Why am I sharing all this with you? My favorite health book of all time, Younger Next Year, (yes, in many ways more favorite than my own book) calls these sorts of activities “kedging.” The authors define “kedging” as planning a vacation or event that will require some training and some mental and physical pushing. I believe that these types of challenges will result in some of our biggest breakthroughs in life.
 
You might be a mom with three small kids, feeling like you have no time for yourself and your body is a larger, stretched out version of before and struggling to feel confident and beautiful. Set a challenge that scares you and find the necessary people and expertise to make it a reality. The confidence you will gain can catapult you to the next level in any part of your life. You might be a woman in your 40s watching your parents age and wondering how to avoid facing some of those same health challenges as you get older.  You want to be able to get down onto the floor and play with your grandkids and avoid taking tons of meds or dealing with severe daily pain.

Get Fit and Help Support My Little Brother Who Just Had a Stroke

I want to first start by thanking each and every one of you who have shown incredible love and support to myself and my entire family over the past several days.  I feel so blessed and loved.  The Joy “Fit Moms” Maher Scholarship has raised over $9,000, which is just amazing along with the over 1,500 fb messages, emails, 150 plus cards, phone calls and texts that we’ve received.  Our family will get through this and you have a lot to do with it.
 
I can’t wait to start sharing with you more recipes, exercises and mindset information soon, but today isn’t that day.
 
I have kept it quiet with most everyone but my TC staff and a few close friends and family, but two days after my mom died, my littlest brother Eric, who lives in Madison, woke up without being able to control his eyes.  He was very dizzy, couldn’t walk and in a bad place.

Stroke

That day was spent in the ER where the doctors did many tests, including an MRI, but couldn’t figure out what was going on.  He was sent home and spent the next 3-4 days laying down with his eyes closed.  Miraculously, he was able to stand and function the day of the celebration of life for my mom. He seemed to be on the mend.
 
Two days ago, I received a call from him that his eyes were bad again and he had numbness and tingling down his left side of his body.  I had to help him walk to the car to take him to the ER. My dad immediately drove from MN to Madison to be with Eric and me.
 
To make a long story short, they just confirmed with another MRI that he had a stroke in his brain stem. Quite ironic, considering this is similar to what my mom died of.
 
Fortunately, this one is smaller, and we hope and believe he will make a full recovery.  The doctors (there have been many working on him in both MN and Madison) are shocked and confused why a seemingly healthy 25 year old would have a clot that would reach the brain stem and are definitely concerned as to what caused it.
 
My brother has been under so much stress and I know he is stressing over the large medical expenses he is racking up.  Fortunately, he has insurance but it is that high deductible kind.
 
My goal has always been to add 100X more value to your life than I would ever ask in return and I just asked for donations for my mom’s fitness scholarship so I don’t want to ask for donations again.

One Key to Happiness!

There are times in life when things happen that are beyond our control.  There was nothing I could have done to prevent my mom’s death, but I do have 100% control over the meaning I give it and how I handle things moving forward.

I could:

  • Be bitter towards God
  • Regret times in the past when I could have spent more time with her
  • Dwell on the fact my mom will never see me get married or have kids
  • Try to blame the doctors for missing a ticking time bomb in my mom’s brain
  • Etc…

But I choose:Wedding

  • Trust God will turn this tragedy into triumph
  • Celebrate all the amazing times we did have together
  • Be thankful my mom got to see one of her sons get married and enjoy the birth of one grandchild
  • Be thankful that her legacy will live on through stories to future wife and kids
  • Accept the fact that life isn’t always fair and we aren’t 100% control of things
  • Treasure each day as a gift

What meaning you give to the many events, conversations, and interactions you have each day will greatly determine your happiness in life. Maybe you are riding your bike and fall and break your collar bone.  You could get into a negative mindset and tell yourself things like, I am so clumsy, I always get hurt, bad things always happen to me, see I shouldn’t exercise, etc.

Or…

You could tell yourself, at least I got hurt while being active, it was just a fluke accident, looks like I get to work on my legs for a few weeks, this gives me a great opportunity to focus on my nutrition, etc.

Today, think about an event or conversation you have recently had that you have given a negative meaning towards, and change those beliefs up.
