Skip This #1 Rule And Your Life Will Be Stuck

By | Balance, Behavior Change, Fit Moms for Life Pledge, Fit Moms for Life Six Week Challenge, Six Week Challenge, Uncategorized

I recently took a trip to Toronto, and as the flight attendant went through the safety talk, it reminded me of maybe the single most important thing that you can do to ensure your long term success in reaching your goals—whether that is losing weight, feeling better, or setting a good example for your kids.

She said “Put on your oxygen mask before helping others…”

To me, that means that if you don’t take care of yourself—if you don’t put on your own oxygen mask first—you won’t be able to be there for others. So many women, especially moms, put everyone else first. They don’t feel that they deserve to take the time or the money to take care of themselves. They feel guilty doing something for themselves, and they may not feel that they are worth it.

But if you don’t take care of yourself, if you let yourself go, then how will you be able to be there for your kids in the long term? What message are you sending to them? Taking that step to put yourself 1 mindsetfirst for once, to believe that you are worth it, is one of the most important things that you can do to set yourself up for success.

Join tens of thousands of other women by committing to take care of yourself, starting right now! Click here to take our Fit Moms for Life Pledge.

Learning to put yourself first is all about your mindset, which is the first of my four pillars of success. I’ll be sharing more about what it means to “change your mind, change your life” and I’ll introduce my other three pillars of success in the next few blog posts. I’ll also share with you an almost unbelievable video on what you can accomplish when you choose to take care of yourself…

What is Your Normal?

By | Fit Moms for Life Six Week Challenge, Health, In-home workouts, Lifestyle, Moms, Mothers, Strength, Uncategorized

I recently climbed Longs Peak, a 14,250 plus mountain. If you know anything about Longs, you may know it kills more hikers then any other climb in Colorado. Tragically, an 18 year old kid fell off the same cliff I was on only 18 hours earlier. The 15 mile, 5,500 vertical feet climb is listed as a 12-14 hour round trip. I had just gotten off the plane and had not yet acclimated to the altitude, which made for an even more challenging hike.

I got up at 2 AM and started the journey with head lamps on. Past the 13,000 foot mark, the wind was blowing in excess of 30 mph and the 1-2 foot ledges with 700 foot sheer cliffs below became very scary. Thankfully, I made it up in 5 hours but was overcome with altitude sickness at the top and had to descend after spending only one minute at the top. Once I descended past the treacherous parts, I had a 5 mile run downhill. My total time was 8 hours. Not bad considering I don’t do tons of cardio nor do I have any altitude training.

Why do I share this story with you?

Depending on what your experience is, depending on your peer group, depending on your circle of influence, you might look at what I did and say one of three things.

1. You are crazy, I could never or would never want to do that.

2. That sounds cool, I would love to have the opportunity to do that!

3. No big deal! What you just did was easy stuff, but you are making a big deal about it.

I will make some generalizations here but this is what the thinking of these three types of people might look like…

The first group probably has never hiked, hasn’t exercised very intensely for many years, and has low confidence in their abilities to get in shape. They don’t know anyone personally who does activities like this and so they just don’t understand.

The second group is most likely quite active, they have achieved many of their fitness goals throughout the years, and have had experience pushing their bodies past levels of comfort. They have friends who go on active adventures and are looking for new ways to push themselves. I would put all of my clients who have been with my program for at least a year in this category.

The final group would be hikers and climbers who have access to mountains on a regular basis. They are part of hiking clubs or groups and they read and study about hiking. They are endurance athletes that surround themselves with friends who are also high level athletes. For them, my climb up Longs Peak was just child’s play. They have moved on to bigger and more challenging things.

I am just using hiking as an example here, but this type of thinking can play out in any area of your life, fitness or otherwise. What your peer group considers “norm” is generally what your norm will be, as well. This is what really scares me about our world today. Society’s “norm” is now to be 30 lbs overweight, to sit most of the day, to use food to celebrate almost everything, and to eat and drink to numb the pain and conflict life can bring. It is no wonder our world has so much sickness, disease and depression.

I want to leave you with one final story. I had just run/walked the final 5 miles of my Longs Peak journey. The feeling I had at the bottom was of pure exhaustion and joy. Right at the end, I finished with a guy who I saw on the way up. I started chatting with him. He was a physical specimen of peak fitness. I discovered he lives in Boulder, about 36 miles away. He left his house at 2 AM, BIKED 36 miles, ran/walked Long’s Peak in 5:15 (almost 3 hours faster then me), and was getting ready to bike back to Boulder. In shock, I told him he was crazy and that I was incredibly impressed and inspired. He smiled and said, “it’s not crazy when everyone else you know does it too.”

He was right, his peer group does things like that on a regular basis and what I would consider crazy, unbelievable, and incredible, is just an ordinary day to this guy and his peer group.

  • So the question is, what does your peer group look like?
  • What do they do on a regular basis?
  • Are they healthy?
  • Are they positive?
  • Are they happy?

If the answer to these questions is no, and you want to be active, healthy, positive, and happy, I would like to challenge you to start to shift your peer group. This doesn’t need to happen overnight, but a shift in peer groups will be necessary if you want to live the life of your dreams. Your peer group—the community that you surround yourself with—is my fourth pillar of success. It will make a huge difference in your ability to make and stick with changes in your life.

Throughout the years I have received hundreds of emails and messages from moms who feel alone and isolated. They don’t have the support they want and need to live the healthy, happy lives they deserve. They don’t have a peer group that is inspired to make each day as healthy, and positive as possible. That is why the Fit Moms for Life team works tirelessly to find creative ways to build communities that will make it easier to identify and find moms that are also interested in living healthy, happy lives.

That is at the core of the Fit Moms Total Transformation Program, which begins with a 6 Week Challenge, and progresses into a Monthly Program with fresh new content delivered each week. Crying on the bathroom floor

By | Balance, Behavior Change, Body Assessment, Fit Moms for Life Six Week Challenge, Health, Lifestyle, Moms, Mothers, Six Week Challenge, Uncategorized

The story I want to share with you today is from a mom named, Liz. Liz is now the head trainer at the Fit Moms Transformation Center, but if you would have known her just 4-5 years ago, you would have never guessed the path she would take.

Here is Liz telling us her story in her own words…

“I was lucky enough to be a stay at home mom with my boys, but with that came a lot of isolation and loneliness. I had made some “mom” friends and our daily activity usually involved eating lunch out. It helped me get through the day to have friends that were going through the same steps of motherhood and understood how hard it was at home.

I was always running errands, many of them unnecessary just to get out of the house. Looking back I remember every minute taking forever and so slowly ticking away, waiting for my husband to get home so I would have some relief from the constant caregiving. What I wouldn’t do now to have those beautiful minutes back with those little boys.

I felt myself falling back into depression, something I battled much of my life. I was not the mom I wanted to be, the mom I pictured I would be when I envisioned motherhood. I was letting my kids down, my husband down and myself down. I just didn’t have energy for anyone. I lacked patience and understanding. I was lazy. I got frustrated easily with my kids and most of all I was just TIRED. Tired of just trying to survive and not living life, tired of not loving my life, tired of not seeing how good I had it, tired of the way things were.

One morning I got on the scale to see where I was at, thinking it would read 180. It read 203- the most I had ever weighed not pregnant.

How had I let it get so bad?!

I sat down on the bathroom floor and just started to cry.

What had I done?!

How had I done this?!

What kind of role model was I to my kids?!

Before I knew it my boys were banging on the door to get in. As all moms know the bathroom is never a personal place with small kids. I picked myself up, wiped the tears from my eyes, and pledged to do something about it. I made an appointment with my doctor to go back on anti-depressants. I started walking with a neighbor every morning. I was really starting to feel better. By the time my doctors’ appointment came around I had decided I was going to use exercise NOT use medication to make myself happy again.

Those morning walks slowly turned into morning run/walks, which turned into runs. I became addicted to what it felt like to push myself.

I joined Dustin’s Fit Moms classes figuring I might as well give it a try. What did I have to lose?!

If nothing else, it was free childcare for 45 minutes, a chance to be me not “mommy”. Oh boy did I struggle those first few weeks.! But everyone was so welcoming and friendly. I looked forward to coming and talking to others, once again not feeling alone all day. My boys were 3 and 1 at the time and it took a lot of energy to keep up with them all day but I was finding the energy to do it!

LizzyBefore I knew it I was exercising at least 5 days a week and LOVING it. I loved that the Fit Moms classes were fun, interactive, and non-judgmental. More important than losing the weight, I was feeling good about myself. I was excited to wake up every morning, excited to spend the day with my kids, excited for whatever was next.

My life has been forever changed on the outside, but most importantly, inside. Through this journey I didn’t find the old me that was lost, I found this amazing new me. A me that loves exercise, that isn’t afraid to speak first or to introduce myself to others, that has self-confidence, that can look people in the eye when I speak to them, and that is capable of anything I put my mind to.

I want every mom to feel good about who she is as a woman, not just as a mom, or a wife. I want every mom to treat herself better and therefore able to treat her family better. I want every mom to realize how important it is to put yourself first.”

Liz G

At first I thought about only sending this out to those of you living in the Madison area, but I decided to send it out to the 10,000s around the world who receive my newsletter and follow Fit Moms For Life. Sometimes, we are all guilty of focusing too much on weight loss, but these testimonial quotes you are about to read will help us be more mindful of the many other benefits that come with living a healthy lifestyle.

Weight loss is just a by-product, or a result , of other areas in a person’s life improving.

Killer Kurves is the most comprehensive, effective, in-person weight loss program I know of, and we are starting a new session this coming week. I’m super excited about this new session, but the bad news is, time is running out and we only have a couple spots open in both the AM and PM time slots.

If you are interested in being surrounded by others who are also looking to make life transformations and lose 40-200 lbs, then you will want to sign up right now because time is running out!

Please read the following quotes from clients who are current Killer Kurves members or are alumni of the program. The program has been so transformational, that over 90% join us for the alumni program after their initial 12 weeks.

“Since I’ve started K2 I’ve been migraine free! I suffered from severe chronic migraines and was on 2 different medications to help with them. The medications had some undesirable side effects too. Well recently I’ve been able to discontinue all medications because I haven’t gotten any migraines! Definitely from exercising and eating healthier.”

“Before K2 I was overwhelmed often with a feeling of anxiety and life just being too much (caused by out of control hormones and way too much cortisol in my system perhaps?) That feeling is gone. I feel good and miss workouts because I feel even better after them — physically and emotionally.”

“I’ve gained confidence in myself and my ability to make healthy choices.”

“I’ve learned to be nicer to myself.”

“I have made some friends that are on the same journey as me who will help me continue.”

“I got my groove back!”

“I have gained strength and confidence in myself that I can do it! “

“I have gained strength that I didn’t even know I missed. And a whole new outlook on my life to go along with it. More confidence, more happiness.”

Our Killer Kurves program includes access to a private Facebook group that has dozens of inspirational posts and comments each day. With their permission, I have a few that I would like to share with you….

Theresa lost a staggering 12 inches off her belly. As you know, belly fat is the most dangerous fat. Assuming she keeps it off, this statistically will extend her life by many years. How much $$ is that worth to you?

Ivy has lost over 50 lbs with Killer Kurves and had a “strange” experience earlier this month…

Ivy

Ebony is just finishing up her first 12 week session with Killer Kurve’s and will be joining the “Alumni” program next. She is shedding fat like it is going out of style.

Great job everyone and thank you for letting me share these quotes and posts. You have undoubtedly inspired many others to make a change!

I am so confident in our Killer Kurves program, I am willing to refund you the entire fee if you come for the first month and aren’t completely happy with the program. What Choices Are You Making For Your Future?

By | Behavior Change, Fit Moms for Life Six Week Challenge, Health, Killer Kurves, Mindset, Moms, Mothers, Nutrition, Uncategorized

The other day I shared with you a powerful video that demonstrates what can happen over time when someone consistently makes poor choices. Click here if you missed it. The hundreds of small choices we make each day determine how our lives will look in the future. These daily choices also affect how healthy our body and the bodies of our family will look and feel. Often, it is only in hindsight that we can see how our disease and sickness started or where our health and wellness began.

Can I just be real with you for a moment?

Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t really like most fitness magazine headlines portray. It isn’t as easy as the infomercial marketers make it sound.

  • Living a healthy lifestyle is hard… Really Hard.
  • Asking for help is hard.
  • Struggling alone is hard.
  • Committing to a 12-week program is hard.
  • Spending money on you for a weight loss program is hard.
  • Paying medical bills for weight induced health issues is hard.
  • Change is hard.
  • Being overweight is hard.

I recently heard a quote that I really resonated with, not sure who said it. “Those who do the hard things now will live an easy life, and those who do the easy things now will live a hard life.” Choose your hard now.

In the upcoming couple weeks you will be hearing from some people who are just like you. They have crazy busy lives, money isn’t always abundant, and they are involved in many different activities with their kids, grandkids, and coworkers. But, they chose to take the “hard” road and make the hard choices and now they are looking at a future that is far brighter than their past.

That is my wish for you – I want you to have a greater, brighter future than your past.

If you live in the Madison area and are 40 lbs or more overweight and are ready to change and choose a different, life changing “hard”, I would like to invite you to join our next Killer Kurves session that starts the week of September 28th. We have expanded to include weekend and evenings for those who can’t make early mornings work.

->-> Click here to reserve your spot in K2 now and change your life! <-<-

If you live in Madison and don’t qualify for this program but are ready for change, email me at dustinmaherfitness@gmail.com and share your story and I will give you some guidance.

Lastly, if you live outside of the Madison area, my team and I have created an amazing program that is based off the Killer Kurves program. It is called the FM4L 6 Week Challenge and over the past year the program has transformed nearly 1,000 women. We have recently launched a digital only version for only $47.

If you are on the fence about K2 and have a few specific questions, I am committing my time to calling you personally to answer your questions. I believe so firmly in this program that I want to do all I can to give you the opportunity to experience your transformation. Email me at dustinmaherfitness@gmail.com with your phone number and a little bit about yourself and I’ll look forward to talking with you soon!

21 dayWe are into the second day of our 21 day challenge. A small percentage of the people participating were able to come to the Transformation Center Sunday night for our kickoff.

Click here if you still want to get in on the challenge. It isn’t too late!

This challenge forces you to cook more at home and read the food labels at the grocery store and in your pantry or refrigerator. Many don’t have the time, knowledge, or expertise to cook at home consistently.

Tracie Fountain, the creator of all of the eating plans in the Fit Moms For Life 6 Week Challenge, has some great tips for making cooking healthy meals easier and faster.

->-> 10 Things To Make Meal Planning Easier <-<

It’s not your fault if you never learned how to cook. Society encourages a fast paced eating-out lifestyle, and your mom may not have involved you in the kitchen. Even though it isn’t your fault, it is your responsibility to make sure your kids learn what to do from you.

Tracie has an incredible 8-week home study course with DVDs and manuals that will give you a PhD in what to eat and how to eat. The best gift you can give your family is healthy food and passing those skills on. Click here to check out her 8-week program. Dozens of my clients have invested in it and loved it.

How the Ice Bucket Challenge Can Help You Lose Weight

By | Behavior Change, Challenge, Fit Moms for Life Six Week Challenge, Health, Mindset, Moms, Mothers, Nutrition, Uncategorized

You might just think of me as this exercise, nutrition, and a little bit of a mindset guy, but I now study and put a lot of my attention on learning about social dynamics, community building, social trends/norms, etc.

Although I will continue to learn what the latest research in nutrition and exercise is, I believe that to help create a healthy change in our society it needs to come from individuals who spread the message to their friends.

At first I was kinda’ annoyed by the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

I wasn’t annoyed that money was getting donated to a very well deserving cause (my grandpa died of ALS so I know how nasty of a disease it is). I guess I just felt like it was cheesy. But, as it has grown and as I have had more time to process it, there are some extremely positive and exciting things about it, from a social perspective.

Click here to add me on FB and watch my video as a bunch of FM4Lers dump the water and ice on me.

I am not going to talk about this from a fundraising standpoint, but rather from the perspective of helping you, your family, those closest to you, and your community all become healthier, fitter, and more positive.

Here is what I have learned or been reminded of from the IBC phenomenon…

When you personally call someone out by name, it makes them feel important to you and they will more likely respond to whatever you are asking of them. In other words, you have more influence on the people around you then you think.

As humans we like to rise up take, and conquer challenges.

It is much more likely that we will do something if those closest around us are doing it too. The desire to feel included and belong is so powerful, no matter our age or social peer group.

Having a strong WHY makes a huge difference. I don’t believe this would have taken off so much if people who have ASL hadn’t come forward and shared their stories. I will admit I was bawling my eyes out when I watched the ESPN video on the guy with ALS who pretty much started this movement.

When you have experienced a type of physical challenge together (although dumping some cold water is such a minor type of challenge/suffering), you tend to bond even more over having done it and then reminiscing about it over and over again.

People are becoming more comfortable with being on video and posting it on social media. This makes me excited, as I am someone who believes that the more we put ourselves out there, the more we can inspire others! It is awesome to see people who would never have posted a video of themselves online, now doing it…..seeing that nothing bad happened from doing it and that they inspired their friends to also challenge themselves.

You might be thinking that I now have some new challenge that I want to give you to try to replicate the IBC in a way that helps make you and your family healthier.

While I do have a bunch of ideas rolling around in my head, I don’t have a formal challenge. But I do want to encourage you in the following way, along with some action steps to follow.

Don’t be shy to make little video clips of you working out in your home, or outside at the playground. Film yourself or your kids helping make a healthy after-school snack or a Saturday morning breakfast.

Post these on social media and tag your friends; those 30 seconds of you doing some pushups with your dog jumping on your back not only will be entertaining but might inspire someone to exercise more.

Challenge a few of your closest friends or family members to do something with you.

Use their name when you call them out. Here are just a few ideas:

  • No alcohol for a month
  • 50 burpees a day for a week
  • No carbs after 6 pm for a week
  • Drink a gallon of water in a day
  • Write down 5 things each day that you are grateful for and share on FB

Tell your story. I get the privilege of hearing hundreds of stories of why it is important for you to be healthy and what you have done, and how that has radically changed your life for the better. This is the best part about my career.

By you not sharing your story more with those with whom you have a personal connection, you are potentially robbing them of a future that is much better than their present state.

So I would like to ask you to write your story out, then make a video of yourself sharing your story. Send it out; people might give you a hard time for not going out drinking with them or skipping an unhealthy social event for a workout, but, they cannot argue or give you a hard time about your story. Your story is your story and that is the beauty of it.

I spent 5 hours Saturday night (yes, I am that cool) creating a 21 day challenge for my clients, and whoever else wants to join in, that I am SO excited about!

Is it going to be extreme?

Yes.

You will hear about it soon and it will start in a couple of weeks, but it stemmed from my frustrations this summer of hearing more excuses from people about why the summer is hard for them to be healthy and stick to eating healthy and exercising.

I am sick and tired of hearing excuses. I am a very patient man, but sometimes I snap-haha:). We need a big kick in the butt, and this challenge will do that for those who accept it.

It would be VERY tough to complete if you were doing it alone, but with 100’s (maybe even 1000’s) who I know will accept this challenge, the support and encouragement we are going to get from each other online and in person will make all the difference.

What is your normal?

By | Behavior Change, Challenge, Fit Moms for Life Six Week Challenge, Moms, Mothers, Six Week Challenge, Uncategorized

I am currently on a 19 day trip from Toronto to Colorado. I recently climbed Longs Peak, a 14,250 plus mountain. If you know anything about Longs, you may know it kills more 1 longest3hikers then any other climb in Colorado. Tragically, an 18 year old kid fell off the same cliff I was on only 18 hours earlier.

Societies “norm” is now to be 30 lbs overweight, to sit most of the day, to use food to celebrate almost everything, and to eat and drink to numb the pain and conflict life can bring.

He smiled and said, “it’s not crazy when everyone else you know does it too.” He was right, his peer group does things like that on a regular basis and what I would consider crazy, unbelievable, and incredible, is just like an ordinary day to this guy and his peer group.

  • So the question is what does your peer group look like?
  • What do they do on a regular basis?
  • Are they healthy?
  • Are they positive?
  • Are they happy?

If the answer to these questions is no, and you want to be active, healthy, positive, and happy, I would like to challenge you to start to shift your peer group. This doesn’t need to happen overnight, but a shift in peer groups will be necessary if you want to live the life of your dreams.

For those living in or near Madison, we build these happy, healthy communities at our five Transformation Center locations. For those living outside of Madison, we have launched our new Fit Moms For Life 6 Week Challenge that rolls into an on-line FM4L Monthly Program with fresh new content delivered monthly. These programs are designed for small groups to keep each other accountable, motivated and inspired to live each person’s best life!

I try to stay away from over-hyping anything, but we at Fit Moms For Life are more than pumped to share our big news with you. We actually shared it to a sold-out live webinar last night, but many of you couldn’t get on because the lines filled so quickly, and others had prior commitments.

We have launched a complete weight loss system that is fully digital and can also be downloaded. This means that you can take the workouts anywhere you want on your laptop, phone, or tablet, and not have to have access to the internet. You can print off the over 80 tasty, easy to prepare, affordable recipes that have been kid-tested and FM4L approved.

You will have access to 7 inspirational stories of women just like you who have lost 50-120 lbs. Each week I will teach you for 10 minutes on topics of the mind, nutrition, exercise, support, and community. You will receive thought-provoking questions that will accelerate your growth.

If you are ready to make a change in your life then this is the program that can do it.

->-> Yes Dustin I Want The Program Now <-<

This takes everything I have learned over the past 10 years and boils it down into a short 6-week transformation.

Dustin, what happens after the 6 weeks are up?

I hope that you will be well on your way to reaching all of your fitness goals, but I know that habits are hard to break and it is a big process that can take time. Due to all of the feedback I have been getting over the past 2 years, I have been in the studio filming for many hours over the past months to create an ongoing monthly program that will dive deeper into each topic from the 6 Week Challenge. There will also be at least 25-30 new recipes each month, two new full-body, fat-burning workouts for you to do at home, and much more.

That sounds incredible! How can I sign up for this monthly program?

Right now we are only offering this to anyone who is an alumni of the 6 Week Challenge program I mentioned above. This is to make sure you first have a solid foundation before going into the more advanced ninja strategies. 🙂

I will see you in the members area!

When you sign up in this first week, we are going to be emailing you out an awesome fast action bonus. One of the nutritionists on our team, Mary, created an incredible 4 week eating plan, with shopping lists that use things that can be found at the farmer’s market. We provided this to a small group of our local clients and the feedback was amazing. This is a $27 value that you are getting for free.
