The #1 Best Way To Stay Accountable To Your Weight Loss/Fitness Goals

By | Fit Moms For Life Book, Fit Moms For Life DVD, Fit Moms for Life Six Week Challenge, Transformations, Uncategorized

I have thought long and hard about this question and after 10 years of research, and real-life observation I have come up with my answer…

The best way to stay accountable to is to help facilitate a group of people who are also looking to improve their health.  Other strategies might include a reward based system. For example, if you workout 4X per week, and don’t go to a fast food joint for the next 6 weeks you will reward yourself with a spa day. Penalty systems can be another way to go. For example you are a hard core democrat. You will give $1000 to the George W. Bush Library Foundation, if you don’t lose 10 lbs this month. These second two strategies play on the pain/pleasure receptors, which are both very powerful and can work well, but I believe the first option, facilitating a group is the most powerful.

WomenSimply put, we are good at letting ourselves down, but we will do anything we can to NOT let our friends and family down.  I have known this tendency in humans for quite sometime, but never has it become so obvious and powerful as in the past 3 months as we launched the Fit Moms 6 Week Challenges across North America (70 of them in total).  When meeting and speaking to many of the leaders their #1 reason for starting their group was to keep themselves on track and accountable.

This surprised me…

I thought they were going to say for the financial benefits (some can make over $1000), or the ability to make new friends, or to give back to their community. But it makes total sense, and that is why the leaders are getting such incredible results (so are the participants), because they are wanting to lead by example.

As we head into 2014, I would like to give you the gift of ultimate accountability and consider becoming a Fit Moms 6 Week Challenge facilitator. Not only will you begin the process of getting in the best shape of your life, you will be enriching and connecting many other women’s lives in the process and get paid for it.

That sounds like a win/win/win.

The best part is it doesn’t take much time on your part, and we have everything you need to promote and lead your group, plus you get exclusive access to myself and my team that is building up the leaders/facilitators.  My goal is to have 30 more leaders signed up by the end of the year so we can launch 100 6 week challenges early next year.

The Dead Zone

By | bootcamps, Fit Moms For Life DVD, Mindset, Transformations, Uncategorized

Dead ZoneA couple months ago I wrote an article that became quite popular talking about many of the different options we have when it comes to getting into shape.

Click here to read the article

I even lost a couple clients from it (which is just fine), when they realized that our program wasn’t the program they needed given their experience and background.  This past week I have been going to a gym that I won’t name, but it is one of those 24-hour type gyms that don’t have attendants at it.  My brother has a membership there and I wanted to be able to have that bonding time with him once in awhile.

The gym is beautiful, incredible brand new treadmills, elliptical, and weight machines. The place is spotless, and the bathrooms shimmer and sparkle. But for me there was something missing…Call it the magic, the sparkle, the energy, the fun. There has not been more then 8 people at this place when I’ve gone. There is no music playing and everyone is wearing his or her headphones. Nobody is smiling; nobody is talking to anyone else.  My brother and I push each other and we get a great workout, since we are following a great workout plan, even so the environment is one that I personally wouldn’t want to workout to on a regular basis.

When I workout I feed off the energy of others…It is the reason I LOVE being part of sports teams or workout groups. We all having “boring” and “monotonous” times in our day, but I believe workouts shouldn’t be one of them. This principle I have known for awhile for myself, but working out this past week in a low energy “dead” place really made me appreciate what I have and what my clients have at our five Fit Moms Transformation Centers.

It makes sense why I am told on a regular basis that coming to the Center and working out is their top highlight of the day. It isn’t because the rest of their lives suck, it is that exercise makes you feel good, and even better when combined with awesome and fun people to share the experience with. If this is the type of environment you want, I challenge you to go out there and find it. Unless you live in a very small town there should be at least one place in town that is high energy, highly supportive, and lots of fun.

If not create it, this is why I created the FM4L 6 Week Challenge. I wanted to make it simple for anyone to create a group of their own and get paid for it.

In conclusion, there are times when silence and being alone is awesome and needed, but for most of us most of the time, life is best when connecting and feeding of the encouragement and energy of others. Don’t let your workout experience be any different.

If you live in the Madison area and can relate to working out in a “dead zone” or maybe you haven’t worked out before but realize that working out in a high energy place is much better, I would encourage you to send me an e-mail, and share your story, I will personally get back to you.

Make This Small “Shift” for Massive Fat Loss Results

By | Behavior Change, Fit Moms For Life Book, Fit Moms For Life DVD, Transformations, Uncategorized

I recently got back from speaking at a convention of dentists and hygienists in Toronto.  Whenever I give a presentation I try to make it very interactive, because we learn best through experience and not just listening. Throughout my 2.5 hour workshop I asked for feedback and insight that each person was getting.  No matter where in the world I speak, one of the constant “ahas” people get is the realization that taking the time to eat the right foods and exercise on a regular basis ISN’T selfish. In fact, not doing so is.  I had a woman in Toronto with tears in her eyes share with me that the guilt she felt from leaving her little baby for a few minutes to exercise was nearly unbearable.

This mind shift is so transformational that it can take a mom who is struggling to have enough energy to take care of her family, to a mom who now feels better, has more energy, is more patient with her kids, and has a better relationship with her spouse.

What was the change?

It was a belief shift that carving out 30 minutes per day for herself will provide the entire family massive amounts of benefits, far greater then those 30 minutes that she could have spent doing whatever to directly help her kids or family.  I have had heated debates with people on this idea. “Dustin, you are saying I shouldn’t take care of my sick child and instead go and workout?”

1Dustin_QuoteHere is my belief…

There are times that it is best to put aside your own time to care for others. Whether that is caring for a sick child, a short term deadline you need to meet at work, or something else that is really pressing.  But if the “emergency” is something that is going to last more then a week, I urge you to still make the time for yourself.  I would put that time for yourself in the same importance as food. You can get away with not eating for a few days and up to a week, but around the week mark your energy levels start to drop and your ability to think clearly, have patience, and have enough energy to take care of all your responsibilities greatly decreases.

I can’t tell you how many times I have seen a new client reach out to me. They are physically and emotionally worn down. They have been through a lot in their personal life, and are only holding on by a thread.  I am not saying they are ready to die, but rather they aren’t fully living each day with excitement, energy and passion. Once they begin making exercise a regular part of their life, and begin to reduce the amount of processed foods they have been consuming, they all of a sudden FEEL better.  FEELING better is more important than LOOKING better. It also comes a lot faster.

I have been leading two Fit Moms For Life 6 Week Challenge groups. We get together once per week for a 90 min discussion and the rest of the week each person is on their own.  After just one week, most had lost 3-6 lbs, which isn’t really noticeable, but all reported FEELING better. That is the cool part, FEELING better happens super fast.   I can’t emphasize it enough the importance of you putting yourself first.  It doesn’t mean you are selfish but rather it is sending a message to your family and to the world, that you are worth it, and that you want to be the most capable person you can be for those you love.

I know that this message is controversial and can evoke many powerful emotions. Each person has their own story and the way they felt it was best to handle their situation, and I respect that. I am not judging anyone for the way they felt the need to handled their lives, but I would encourage you to give this a try next time and see if the outcome is better. If it isn’t, by all means go back to your previous way of handling things.  You are worth it!

5 Tips To Lose a Jean Size in 28 Days (aggressive fat loss)

By | Fit Moms For Life Book, Fit Moms For Life DVD, Lowerbody toning, Transformations, Uncategorized

muffintop700“I want to fit back into my skinny jeans,” is one of the most common things I hear said when someone comes to me for help. Another one is, “I want to have less of this hanging over,” as they grab their fat around their midsection which many refer as their “muffin top.”

In order to lose an entire jean size is just 28 days you will need to really do everything right. Here are 5 aggressive things you can do to drop a jean size.

#1 Make your only liquid you drink the entire time be water. Liquid calories generally get in the way of our fat loss goals… are their exceptions? Sure, but not for these 28 days.

#2 Know where you are starting. Measure your waist, hip, and thighs so you have your numbers and also do a few fitness tests before you get started.

#3 Go gluten and dairy free. Many people have food sensitivities to gluten and dairy, so lets just go off it for these 28 days and see if you feel any different, and then reintroduce them after.

#4 Consume a good amount of fat (30% or more) to regulate hormones, boost metabolism and make you feel full.  Coconut oil, real butter, EV olive oil, avocados, nuts, and seeds are all great sources of fat.

#5 Exercise 4-6 times per week doing a combination of intense weight training, burst training, and maybe even a day or two of longer distance cardio. We need to turn your body into a fat burning machine. Really focus on your leg exercises for weights, because they are your biggest muscle groups, burn the most calories, and are what you are trying to change to slip into your skinny jeans.

#6 (Bonus) Have at least 2-3 others who are checking up on you and supporting you and making sure you are following through on your 28 day commitment.

My trainers and I have created a 28 Day Intro “Skinny Jeans” program. This is designed for anyone who has never been part of our programs in the past or it has been a year or more since you have.  I tried something new out and was going to only offer this through Facebook ads. We have a limited number of spots that were available and all but 6 spots were taken just from the Facebook ads. So, I want to give you the opportunity to get one of the last ones.

What is included?

Fitness Should Be Fun

By | Behavior Change, Body Assessment, Cardio Workouts, Fit Moms For Life Book, Fit Moms For Life DVD, Nutrition, Transformations, Uncategorized

CEOEvery speaking engagement I do, I get everyone moving and interacting with each other. I have never had a group that I couldn’t get to laugh like we did when we were kids… Seriously, I have worked with lawyers, accountants, engineers, and high powered wealthy CEO’s and it is always awesome to lighten up the atmosphere with laughter.

Learning should be about FUN, and doing things that you normally wouldn’t do.  I think having fun is what is missing in today’s society, and also the fun in today’s workouts. I don’t believe Zumba is the best workout around, but for people who like to dance, it is FUN for them, and for that I say go for it!

I was reflecting back on our FM4L 6 Week Challenge groups in Madison, WI, a program that has taken nearly a year to develop and 10 years worth of experience that has gone into it.  I was speaking with a woman who is doing the challenge with her mom.  She said her mom laughs through the entire workout. That was great to hear, because I intentionally had a few good guy friends apart of the group workout DVDs to make things goofy and fun.  Nutrition shouldn’t be hard and complicated either. It should be simple, straight forward and fun. My natural-nutritionist Tracie Hittman-Fountain, who I have been working with for 6 years, and who is the mastermind behind the eating plan, made it as simple as possible for moms or anyone else to cook and prepare.

This morning I received an inspiring email from a woman named Laura. I want to stress her results are NOT typical.  I also want to show it is possible for some whose bodies aren’t in a healthy homeostasis balance when following the the Fit Moms for Life plan exactly, results will happen!

Laura Loses 9 lbs in One Week on the Fit Moms for Life 6 Week Challenge.

1000020_10201810699255528_249945312_n“When I was down to only 2 pairs of shorts that fit, I was ready for a change. I cut out all the really bad stuff: pop, doughnuts, cookies. But I was still working out as usual and having the occasional frozen pizza, maybe 2 servings at a time. After 2 weeks of doing it alone there was no change in the scale. What was wrong?

I had been receiving Dustin’s newsletter for 2 years and knew he would be able to help me. I emailed him, introducing myself and asking what he could do to help. I also started scouring his newsletters, gleaning all I could. I noticed there was a 6 week challenge coming up and thought this might be what I needed! Dustin answered my email within a day and told me about the challenge: new exercises for me, a meal plan, and a support group that meets once a week (plus Dustin to answer all my questions, inferred).

I signed up, picked up my materials, and I tried his fit moms’ workout right away, where we got to push an SUV around the parking lot, just like on The Biggest Loser! Then I went to his Elver Park boot camp. That hill is hard even for someone who exercises a lot! The meal plan is just what I needed. You just pick a breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks from the list, and there are recipes for the main dishes. I said to myself, “Where are all the big salads?” There are some salads, but mostly, hearty, healthy foods. In a week, I have lost 9 pounds. When you sign up, be sure to try the sweet potato souffle and the spinach quiche. Mmmm!?”

-Laura K

Thanks Laura for sharing and for your commitment and excitement for the program.

There are a couple great lessons we can learn from Laura, no matter what type of program or routine you join/start.

#1 A problem… Laura was down to two pairs of shorts that fit her. This was her pain point that made her take action.

#2 Do what she knew how to do… Laura eliminated the obvious things that we all know are bad. This is a great first step, but in her case didn’t get her to her desired outcome.

#3 Asked for her… Laura reached out to me for help

#4 Became educated… Laura went back to the probably hundreds of newsletters I had sent her over the past few years to glean as much as she could.

#5 She took action and purchased the FM4L 6 Week Challenge for just $99.

#6 She followed the program and didn’t waiver from it.

Like I said this is a great recipe to follow for awesome results no matter if you do any of my programs, P90X, CrossFit, Zumba, or the hundreds of other programs out there.

Due to the large response in Madison for the FM4L six week challenge that I am holding, I am going to add a second time slot on Thursday nights at 7 pm! I have my first kickoff party this Tuesday (Oct 22) night at 7 pm at the Fit Moms TC, 202 South Gammon Road. Everyone who has signed up or wants to hear more about it before making a decision can come and hang out with me that night. We will be watching a short powerful video, getting to know each other and having a lot of fun. THEN the next week we will officially start, so nothing on Thursday the 24th, but we will meet on the 31st (Halloween).

A couple days ago blogged about the characteristics of a negative support network.  If you feel like you could relate to any part of that and want to change, I would like to try to come along side of you and encourage you. I have found that creating a health and wellness focused group of friends can go a long way into starting down that path of positive, abundant-minded friends ~ a positive support network.

Over the past nine months my incredible team and I have been working very hard behind the scenes taking a look back on the past decade of training clients and what has worked and what hasn’t.  We kept asking ourselves this question…

“How can we create a program that is so simple, affordable, and transformational, that it will spread like wild fire and build communities of like minded people in the process?”

Over the past year we believe we have found the answer. This summer was spent filming all brand new workouts, taking the best of the best from the past 10 years, and bringing in some of my top clients to film the workouts with us.  With the help of our incredible nutrition experts we combined cutting edge science, with simple and affordable meal plans that wouldn’t take hours to prepare and would SAVE you TIME and MONEY.  Then we took the most powerful techniques on mindset, goal setting, and time management and bundled it into a plan that only requires SMALL changes.

What we have is the Fit Moms For Life 6 Week Challenge!

Screen shot 2013-10-16 at 9.45.29 PM

It’s designed to be done in groups with other people, although you can do it by yourself and still get incredible results.

Click here if you want to see if there is a group near you formed. If not you can click here to start your own group.

In the first month of launching we have 65 groups started with hundreds of participants. We believe that this is the little pebble that is starting a massive movement towards community-based health and wellness programs. It starts in the home and begins by changing the relationships you have and the relationships you have towards food and exercise.

If you are living in the Madison, WI area, I am going to get into the action and lead a Fit Moms For Life 6 Week Challenge group myself. It will take place Tuesday nights at 7 pm at the Fit Moms Transformation Center (202 South Gammon) starting Oct 22nd. The first meeting will be our “House Party”, I will provide some food and everyone who is signed up AND anyone who is still thinking about joining is asked to attend. We will have some fun music, games, and watch a powerful 20 min video that explains a bit more about what you will experience over the next six weeks.  ->->Sign up while spots remain<-<-

Screen shot 2013-10-16 at 9.08.53 PM

Those who are still on the fence will then sign up and the following week will be starting week 1.   If you are local to Madison and would like me to add a second session at 7 pm on THURSDAYS reply to this email and let me know.  If we get 8 responses I will have a second group.

Screen shot 2013-10-16 at 9.08.24 PM

We have many also doing it remotely and joining us in our online community and that is great too. Many of them will become leaders once they see how much their body is transforming.

2***This picture is of one of the groups led by another leader Shelley after finishing up one of the fun group workouts together.

Bottom line is whatever type of exercise and eating plan you choose, I would encourage you to find a couple people to be your accountability partners and support team. Our culture as a whole is rooting for us to stay fat, sick, and unhealthy. We shouldn’t expect will power to be our only defense.

I Will Step Up

By | Behavior Change, Fit Moms For Life DVD, Mindset, Transformations, Uncategorized

I attended a 50 hours in a total immersion program with Tony Robbins in Chicago awhile back.  It was called Unleash The Power Within. The first night I walked 15 feet barefoot in a fire, it was powerful.  I had so many breakthroughs and takeaways from it, but instead of writing a huge article, I wrote myself a poem, or maybe a rally cry is a better way of putting it. This was meant for just me, but after reading it, I thought there might be some nuggets that you can take and use in your life.

Here is MY rally cry… I challenge you to make your ownBlog-Challenge

I will not settle for being average

Average can be for everyone else who isn’t looking for excellent

But I don’t even want to be excellent, I want to be OUTSTANDING

I can change any story in my head that hasn’t been serving me

I can change the outcome by changing my attitude

I can change my attitude by changing my state

And I can change my state INSTANTLY by CHOOSING to

My past will only fuel my future

My body is the only one I will have, I will love and care for it

I will look for ways to add value to any situation

I will love deeper

I will look at my potential and capabilities rather then my limitations and shortcomings

I will treasure each moment as a gift from God

I will be grateful in every situation

I will take full responsibility for my results

I will play full out in life, dancing more, singing more, laughing more, and loving more

I will be a leader and not a follower

An action taker not a procrastinator

A solutionator not an excusenator

A problem solver not a complainer

I am going to acknowledge fear and do it anyways

I am going to strengthen the habits that serve me and starve the habits that destroy

I am courageous, meaning I do it anyway even though I am scared

I am committed to learning and growing each day

I will use words that empower instead of tear down

I know the outcome I want

I know the reasons why I want that outcome

I will take massive action towards that outcome

I will observe if the action is working

And I will change the approach if needed

The past doesn’t equal the future unless you live there

I will get what I want because I have a big enough reason WHY

I will do what I say and say what I do

I will keep good company because my standards are in direct proportions to the expectations of my peer group

I will look at everyone around me as my teammates

I will treat people nice who don’t treat me nice

I will not put limitations on what I am capable of

I will focus on deep breathing

I will model the success of those I look to be like, since success leaves clues

I have control over how my body feels

Exercise and eating healthy is part of who I am, not just something I do

Now I am the Voice

I will lead, not follow

I will believe not doubt

I will create not destroy

I am a Force for Good

I am a Leader

I will defy the odds and set new standards

I will step up

I will step up

I will step up

Mary’s Journey To Discovering Herself and Dropping 74 lbs

By | Behavior Change, Blog, Fit Moms For Life DVD, In-home workouts, Mindset, Nutrition, Uncategorized

Mary is someone I have yet to meet but hope one day to.  She has been a faithful follower of the Fit Moms For Life workouts and eating plans for a couple years and the results are very dramatic.  I really like the part about her story where she shares about being overweight her entire life.  Many people believe that when you are overweight at a young age, you are doomed to a life of obesity, it just doesn’t have to be that way!  Enjoy her story, and write any comments or questions below.

Here is Mary’s story…

“I have been overweight for the entirety of my life.  I have no memories of ever having a flat stomach, not even as a child.  My childhood friends commented often on how my body looked different; one little friend in particular loved to make it a point that I understood that she was so much smaller than I was.

Along with being overweight as a child, I have no memories of a time when I was not following some diet.  My parents would encourage me to exercise and eat healthy.  I read magazines full of fad quick fix diets and I would make real effortful attempts to follow the various diets that I read about.  But despite those efforts and my parent’s encouragement to eat healthy, the kitchen always had Twinkies, ice cream, potato chips, crackers, and sodas on hand… you name it the kitchen had it.  As a kid, and even as an adult, it’s hard to not eat foods that you crave and love if they are so easy to get to.  So despite whichever diet I tried to follow, I was not successful at keeping away from the junk food drawer…yes, my parents had a designated junk food drawer.

I was pretty active as a kid.  I rode my bike a lot, got into inline skating, and walked with my mom.  Billy Blanks came out with Tae Bo when I was in middle school, but despite the exercise that I did, I was still always pretty chubby.

When I was in High School, my parents took me to a weight loss specialist.  I followed the plan that the doctor had put me on religiously.  I was only allowed to eat 900 calories a day, I was taking oral medications that sped up my metabolism and suppressed my appetite, and was even given weekly injections that would boost my energy levels.  While in this program, I lost about 45 pounds and I lost it very quickly.  When I went off to college I was thinner than I had ever been, and I was very happy about it.  However, leaving the doctor’s program with no more appetite suppressors, no more medications that would speed up my metabolism, and no longer eating only 900 calories a day, I quickly gained back the 45 pounds that I had lost, and… by the time I graduated from college I had gained another 40 pounds on top of that.  And, I gained that weight back plus some even while exercising.  I was walking and running consistently through my college years.

I am not a tall girl, I’m somewhere between 5’2”-5’3”, and by the age of 23, I weighed in at 215 pounds.  And I was so ashamed of myself.  I was disappointed that I was unsuccessful at keeping the weight off that I had lost, and was so sad that I was still the fat girl.  For a couple of years I kind of just gave up and resolved that I was just the fat girl and always would be.  But again, I was so ashamed of what I looked like.  I did everything I could to hide myself and disappear.  I wore a sweatshirt and jeans everyday, even in the summer!  I never did anything with my hair, I actually wore baseball caps most of the time.  I NEVER wore makeup.

I spent the next 2 years living very isolated.  Eventually I got to the end myself in this area; and when you get to the end of yourself, you either choose to fight, or you give up all hope.  I knew that I couldn’t live life the way that I had been living it, and I wanted to live my life as fully as I possibly could.  So when I turned 25, I became flat out DETERMINED that I was going to take some of my excess weight off.  I decided that enough was enough, and I was done living in such unhealth.  I wanted to be able to ride a bike, to be able to hike in the mountains without stopping every 50ft to rest.  I wanted to be able to play and run and have fun.  I wanted to be able to live a physically active and physically playful life.  I decided that I was done isolating, done moping and hiding and wishing that things were different.  I decided in a moment that I was going to combat my unhealthy lifestyle and beat it no matter what it took (never underestimate the power of a choice).

I joined a gym, an all women’s gym because I did not want men to see me.  My parents very generously paid for my membership and also bought me an elliptical machine so that I would be able to exercise on the days that I couldn’t make it to the gym.  I went, yet again, on another diet where I ate things that were low-fat, sugar-free, frozen Smart Ones and Healthy Choice meals, diet sodas, etc… the whole works (right?).  I ate this way, and exercised consistently at the gym and on my elliptical for 6 MONTHS… and I didn’t lose a single pound.

One afternoon, I had just pulled into my driveway after returning from the gym, and I melted down crying in my car.  I was DESPERATE for some breakthrough, for some results for all of the time and effort that I was putting into this.  I believe in God, I love Jesus (I met Jesus when I was 23 years old and got to give my heart to Him), and I was begging Him to help me, to give me something anything that would help me to lose some of the excess weight and get my body physically healthy.  After I was able to get myself out of my car and into my house, I went to my computer and decided to log on to Facebook (which I RARELY do, I have yet to get on board with this whole social media revolution.  I can barely use my cell phone and it’s just a basic flip phone dumb phone device).  But on Facebook, an old friend of mine had tagged me in a notice (or whatever you call it) about Dustin Maher’s fitness program.  What she wrote about Dustin’s program captivated me, so I went to the website.

I couldn’t believe what I found there.  As I navigated my way through the website, I read about how doing cardio for exercise was ineffective for weight loss.  I absolutely believed that because it had proved to be so true in my life!  He explained how strength training and building muscle was effective for weight loss, because the more muscle you have on your body the more fat you burn.  Everything I read seemed to be true, so I started to get a little excited, I got my hopes up, and checked out what DVDs he had to offer.  Dustin was running a deal on one of his DVD series called Fit Moms for Life, where if I paid for shipping, I would receive the first DVD free.  Now, I am not a mom, but I figured if busy moms could do this, than absolutely I could do this.  So, of course I ordered it.  When it arrived, I saw that I needed a set of dumbbell weights and a yoga ball, so I went to the Wal-Mart and purchased 5lb, 8lb, and 15lb weights to start.  And after the first month, I had actually experienced some weight loss!  I was dying for the 2nd DVD, I couldn’t afford to buy them, but my parents really do love me and support me however they possibly can, so they paid for all 12 of my DVDs.

Mary now, 74 lbs lighter!

Each DVD also contains a nutrition lesson.  These nutrition lessons are solid gold to me!  I discovered that I knew nothing about nutrition!  After watching a few of them, I realized that the low-fat, sugar-free, Healthy Choice frozen dinner eating plan was ALL WRONG.  Nothing that I knew about food was true.  So, over the past 2 ½ years, I have been on a journey where I’ve had to unlearn everything thing that I’d ever learned about food, and relearn it all from scratch.  I needed to change the ways that I thought about food, so I did just that. I took Dustin’s nutrition guidance very seriously and did some research of my own.  With Dustin’s help I taught myself nutrition, stopped eating frozen meals, and taught myself to cook.  I experienced many MANY kitchen fails, but today I can say that I’m a pretty decent cook.

I paid attention to myself and learned what my food traps were.  For example, from September-May, the Reese’s Company infiltrates the grocery stores.  In September out come the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup pumpkins.  And the day after Halloween, the pumpkins go on sale, and the Reese’s Christmas trees come out.  Then, the day after Christmas, out come the Valentines hearts, followed by the Easter eggs… and the grocery store sells them individually right by the checkout line so that you can grab one (or 5) to have to eat on the drive home.  I know ahead of time, before I even go into the store that these are going to be there, so they don’t catch me off guard and I can avoid caving in.  I decide in advance before I go into the store that I’m not going to buy them, and if I know that I’m experiencing weakness in my food choices, I make it a point to shop at a different store that I know does not sell them so readily.

Also along these lines, I would to go to a party or a get together with friends where lots of salty snacks and baked goods were available.  I would spend all of my energy and thoughts trying to eat as many cookies or chocolates that I could possibly eat without people noticing that I was eating so many.  I wasn’t able to invest in my friendships because I was only thinking about the food.  So I adopted a motto for myself of “enjoy the one”.  I taught myself how to eat only one cookie and one piece of chocolate.  It took a while to learn how to do this, but I can now go to these parties and get togethers, enjoy my friends and invest in my relationships, and I can eat that single cookie that I love, enjoy it, and not be left longing for 12 more of them.

A helpful tip Dustin encourages for your healthy lifestyle is to follow an 80% 20% eating plan.  Eat healthy and wisely 80% of the time, and the not so healthy foods 20% of the time.  This 80/20 gage is so helpful and SO DOABLE.  I spend my 20% primarily on dark chocolate with sea salt and kettle corn.

Over Thanksgiving last year I gained a few pounds, so after that holiday, I journaled about it.  I went over all of the places that I went, what I ate, the food I consumed while I was cooking (you know what I mean; those harmless little bites and taste tests…uh huh).  I learned myself though journaling these things out.  I saw what my traps were, the places where I tripped up.  And after seeing those things and pinpointing where I went wrong, I made a game plan for the Christmas Holiday.   And… I actually lost weight over Christmas last year!  My game plan actually worked.  I ate all of the seasonal foods that I enjoy (I’m one of those weird people that loves fruit cake), but because I had this game plan, I didn’t overdo it.  I know how to handle the holidays without packing on weight and without missing out on the holiday goodies.

I have been doing Dustin’s Fit Moms for Life  program for 2 ½ years now.  I get to use heavier weights now than the 5lb-15lb weights that I started out with.  I now use up to 45lb dumbbells.  With the workouts that Dustin takes you through, his guidance, the encouraging stories of the women featured on his DVDs, and the nutrition and knowledge of food that I have learned… over the last 2 ½ years I have lost between 70-75 pounds, and have kept it off!  I am smaller now than I was during my first few years of college.  My friends and family can’t believe how different I look and encourage me all the time.  I can’t believe the energy that I have and how different my body feels.  My knees don’t hurt nearly as much now THANKFULLY.

I know how to eat.  Without following a diet, I know how to eat healthily and successfully.  I know how to fit a workout into a busy day.  I know what my food traps are and I have a game plan to overcome each one of them.  The way that I think about food has flipped a complete 180 degrees and I don’t see food the same way that I used to.  I don’t worry about gaining back the weight that I have lost.  And I’m actually not finished dropping weight yet, I have about 15-20 pounds left to lose but I know that I am going to lose those remaining pounds.  I feel set up for the rest of my life to live as a healthy woman.  I hope to be a wife and mother someday and I feel set up to be a successful mother in the area of healthy nutrition and exercise (I WON’T have a designated junk food drawer for them).

I am so thankful for what I have learned through the Fit Moms for Life program.  I don’t feel like or worry that I will fail in this area again ever.  Of course, I will have my days where I don’t eat as well as I could have, especially on those days right before my period…yep.  I don’t believe in perfection but I do believe in excellence, so I don’t expect myself to be perfect at this, but I do know how to be successful.  I know how to be successful in the day to day, and in the long run.  I would absolutely recommend this Fit Moms for Life program to everyone; to moms, single women, and I would even recommend it for men.  It’s possible, it’s doable, and it’s sustainable.”

How Deb Overcame Loss of a Baby, Binge Eating, and Depression

Deb before starting Fit Moms For Life

I would like to share with you a story of a woman who was tired, depressed, had food addictions, bad menopause reactions and a death of a child.  Anyone of these challenges is tough to overcome, but the deck of cards was certainly stacked against her.  Fortunately she was ready for a change and was determined to take back her life.  Also fortunately, she happened to find the Fit Moms For Life DVD program and was about to start the transformation of her life!

Here is her story in her own words…

I am 50 years old and have been battling my weight and unhealthy eating since I had kids who are 29 and 26. Our first child died right after birth (he would have been 30 this year) and that took an emotional toll on me and I began using food for comfort. Even though I have never been very overweight my health was affected by my extra 20 pounds and very bad eating habits.

Using food as a stress reliever was causing a lot of problems both emotionally and physically. I wouldn’t just over eat but would binge eat at times. Food was controlling me. I heard once that you can tell if you have a food problem if you live to eat and not eat to live. Wow, that was me. I planned what I was going to eat next before I was done with what was in front of me. This addiction to food lead me to be depressed, which lead me to eat more, then more depression, a vicious circle. Read More

Erin From Long Island Discusses Fit Moms For Life Home Workout DVDs

Fit Moms For Life DVD

Erin and I at a small diner in NYC

One of my favorite things to do when I travel is to meet Fit Mom For Lifers from around the country who faithfully follow the Fit Moms For Life DVD program and live a lifestyle that radically transforms their body, relationships, and attitude.  On a recent trip out to NYC, Erin took the 80 minute train from Long Island to have breakfast with me.

The two things that struck me the most that you will see in the video is her dedication and no excuse attitude and her desire to push her body to limits that she might not even have thought she could get to.

I was especially impressed that she would do 30 lb squat to shoulder presses with dumbbells in each hand on her own.  Many moms don’t even think that they can lift 12 lb dbs, let alone 30’s.  🙂
