Single mom ready to end it all, chooses life

I knew Onica was a special person the day I met her. I only had about 20 minutes to get to know her, but I could see deep hurt within her and yet I also sensed she was a strong, determined woman that was ready to give it her all.

Fast forward about two months and I was sitting at the Transformation Center going through my e-mail when I received the testimonial you are about to read. My name is Onica and I have struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. I have gained and lost and lost and gained more times than I care to count. In high chool my diet of choice was Anorexia, I would eat nothing all day and then have just enough dinner so that my parents wouldn’t notice something was off. I kept the weight off until I was 25 and went from jobs where I stood all day and rarely ate breakfast or lunch to a desk job where it seemed like someone wanted to take everyone out to lunch daily. The pounds piled on quickly after that. I had my son at 26 and never lost the baby weight. Two years later I had my daughter and 6 weeks after she was born I joined a weight loss program. I did great and was 7 pounds from my goal when self destruction kicked in. We had recently moved an hour away from our hometown and I knew no one, I was a stay at home mom and it was winter. I learned that I love to bake and more than that I loved to eat what I baked. Again, the pounds piled on, I was more than I had ever weighed, even when I was pregnant.

Fast forward 2 more years, I was now a divorced, single mom trying to make ends meet. It wasn’t easy to say the least. Every small bump in my life made me feel like I was sinking deeper and deeper into a pit that I was never going to be able to claw my way out of. I felt that every single aspect of my life was just too much for me to handle, that nothing I did was good enough, or could possibly be worth anything to anyone, that my kids would be better off if I weren’t around. What kind of a role model was I for them? Wouldn’t it just be better for them if they didn’t grow up with a mom like me, someone who never had any time or energy for them, whose house wasn’t spic and span and who was fat? I had a plan to end it all, I didn’t have a time frame, but I had a plan. It would have appeared to have been an accident so that my ex would still get the life insurance to use for raising the kids and above all no one else would be injured and my kids wouldn’t be the ones to find me. I had a plan.

Then on September 5th an email came into my inbox from Dustin. It was about a 21 day clean eating challenge. My sister told me that she and her husband were going to take the challenge and that I should do it with them. I decided to go for it. Part of that was to meet with Dustin in person to discuss your weight loss challenges and goals etc. That day changed my life, more accurately, that day saved my life. After I gave a short run down on my weight history Dustin told me about his Killer Kurves program, I didn’t think there was any way I could make it work for me financially or with my schedule so I tried to just forget about it. However it seemed that nothing would make the thought of this program leave my head. It sounded so perfect for me. After several days of not being able to stop thinking about it I rearranged my schedule with my kids, worked out a financial plan and I signed up. I can honestly say that signing up for K2 was the best decision I have ever made for myself.

On our first night I was nervous but excited. Everyone there seemed to be in the same boat. The trainers were very friendly and accommodating to everyone’s fitness level and any physical limitations we had. The people were all super friendly and no one was judging anyone else. As the weeks have gone on we have formed a bond with each other, the support and encouragement is like nothing else I have ever experienced. We have turned into a family of sorts and I love it, I can’t imagine my life without K2 now.

One of the things that I have learned to do is to view food as fuel for my body and not a hobby or way to relieve stress. I won’t put a certain brand of gasoline in my car because it gets terrible gas mileage with it so why did I continue to put food in my body that was terrible for my health and energy? It has really changed the way I look at eating.

We are currently starting our 9th week of the 12 week program and I have lost 29.2 pounds and 14 inches. My self esteem is on the way back up and the pride in myself that I feel is amazing! The little things no longer throw me to the bottom of the pit and I am smiling more than I have in years. I’m not where I want to be yet but I am a whole lot closer and more importantly I now have the support, knowledge, and confidence in myself to keep going towards that goal and not to just give up because of a setback or hard day.

If there is anyone out there that is on the fence about joining Killer Kurves, I say do whatever it takes to make it happen! You will not be disappointed. I know I’m not. Your life will never be the same again.

My Mom’s Fitness Scholarship Now Available… Apply Now!

Wow, it has been two months to the day that my mom went to Heaven after suffering a massive brain aneurysm with no warning signs.  She was the healthiest 66 year old I knew which made the loss more painful and shocking.  

Here is a picture I will cherish forever, this was taken a couple hours before we took her off life support.  I got to hold my only niece, who for the past 4 months, hadn’t let me hold her. It was hard on my mom to see Ellyanna cry when I tried to hold her and she kept encouraging me to not give up and soon Ellyanna would let me hold and play with her again.  Yes, mom, yes, she did, you got your wish.
 
As I sat by her in the ICU crying, knowing that in hours she would no longer be with us, I asked myself how can this tragedy bring about some positivity in my mom’s honor? A scholarship for those who can’t afford my programs instantly popped into my head. In the weeks after her death, money poured in from all over the world and we have raised close to $15,000 to help subsidize our memberships at the Transformation Center.

I Conquered My Fear Of Water And Swimming…

This past weekend, I decided to go out and conquer my fear of water and swimming. One year from now, I will need to efficiently swim 2.4 miles for Ironman.  I have never been able to make it further than down and back at a pool, and haven’t treaded water for more than 2 minutes. That is why attempting to swim across Devil’s Lake, 1.2 miles terrified me.

With the support of a SUP that stayed near me. I was able to make it all the way across in a very slow and inefficient 71 minutes and only threw up 4 times during the swim.  I was unable to front crawl, so I spent the entire time laying on my back, flopping. I will probably use a few different swim coaches for the next year because I know this swim will probably be one of my hardest challenges.
 
The other day, I was sitting in my office at the Transformation Center working and eavesdropping on a handful of women in their 60s who had just finished their workout. The one woman was telling the other ladies about her epic hiking trips out to the mountains. The other ladies were inspired and they began to talk about possibly doing a trip either together or with others, and starting off with a smaller hike because of the confidence they have been getting through our Fit over 60 training program.
 
This made me think of my mom, and three years ago, she agreed to hike a 14,000 plus foot mountain in Colorado because it was what her kids wanted to do. This was the furthest thing from her comfort zone or personal desire. My mom did make it to the top having given every ounce of her energy and strength.  Seeing my mom climbing hands and feet at the top and saying, “only for you kids,” is a memory I will always cherish and it brings tears to my eyes every time I think about it.
 
Why am I sharing all this with you? My favorite health book of all time, Younger Next Year, (yes, in many ways more favorite than my own book) calls these sorts of activities “kedging.” The authors define “kedging” as planning a vacation or event that will require some training and some mental and physical pushing. I believe that these types of challenges will result in some of our biggest breakthroughs in life.
 
You might be a mom with three small kids, feeling like you have no time for yourself and your body is a larger, stretched out version of before and struggling to feel confident and beautiful. Set a challenge that scares you and find the necessary people and expertise to make it a reality. The confidence you will gain can catapult you to the next level in any part of your life. You might be a woman in your 40s watching your parents age and wondering how to avoid facing some of those same health challenges as you get older.  You want to be able to get down onto the floor and play with your grandkids and avoid taking tons of meds or dealing with severe daily pain.

Set a challenge that scares you and find the necessary people and expertise to make it a reality. The confidence you will gain can catapult you to the next level in any part of your life.

You might be a woman in your mid 50s and have put on 30lbs of fat all around the midsection from the big “M” word.  You hardly recognize the body that you were just 5 years ago and wonder if your best years are already behind you. “Know Thine Own Self…”

This is what has been rolling around in my head for the past few weeks. I decided a few weeks ago that I am going to do the Ironman next year.  Not only do I want to complete it, I want to finish in under 12 hours. The past few years I have dabbled with the idea of “someday,” but seeing my mom die so suddenly this summer and my 25-year-old brother suffering a stroke just 2 days later, I was acutely reminded that someday isn’t guaranteed.

This is a big step for me.  If you have been following me at all for the past 10 years, you know I have been VERY anti cardio and long distance activities and have very little background in it. Side note: I still don’t believe it is the best way to lose fat and tone up; strength training, interval training, and healthy eating is still best for that.

Some of you know also that I really HATE the water.  I am really good laying by the pool getting a tan or sitting in a boat watching others jump in but me getting in the water is another story. I can barely swim to save my life and participating in the Ironman will make me swim 2.4 miles while being kicked and hit by 2,500 other swimmers.

Why am I sharing this all with you?

On my own will or motivation I have NO DESIRE to practice and learn how to swim.  I also don’t have a strong desire to run long distances. I do LOVE to bike, but only with groups, not a big fan of riding alone. I also don’t know how to really TRAIN for an Ironman.

I am doing what I encourage you to do, which is to hire a coach. My coach is a professional Ironman athlete and also works with about 200 others to help them complete their first race or work towards turning pro.

Having my coach will:

  • Reduce the chances of injury
  • Make things more fun
  • Save me time researching best training programs, gear, and nutrition
  • Introduce me to others in the Madison community training for Ironman
  • Push me harder than I would push myself
  • Help me overcome stumbling blocks that will inevitably occur over the next year
  • Cheer me on during my successes and comfort and encourage me during my challenges
  • Help me reach my goals faster

Over the past 24 days, I have had 310 women, ages 50 and up, apply for our NEW small group training program.  I have spoken to over 200 of them on the phone and most have told me the same thing, which is, “I realize that I don’t seem to be motivated to do it on my own.  I know what to eat, and I know I should exercise more, but I just can’t seem to do it.” They say it like there is something wrong with them.  There is nothing wrong with you if you struggle with motivating yourself to exercise more and eat healthier.

Just like I don’t want to learn how to swim or run long periods of time, I know I need a coach to be there for me.

If you live near an Ironman race, I can’t encourage you enough to go out and watch the swim start at 7 AM and then the finish line at the Capitol Square between 9pm and midnight.  You will shed some tears and be in awe. Ironman Wisconsin is in Madison on Sunday, September 13th.  Come join me at Monona Terrace at about 6:30 AM and watch one of the greatest sports spectacles.  If all goes as planned, one year from now I will be in that water ready for a day I will never forget.

Lessons From Having Just Completed 10,000 Pullups

A few months back I wrote in this newsletter and posted on Facebook that 100 days from now I will have completed 10,000 pullups, 100 each day for 100 days. I am proud to say I completed this with near perfection.  The only slip up was one day I forgot and went to bed with 20 to go.  Waking up the next morning I realized it and did those plus that days 100.  ->-> Click here to watch my pullup video on my personal Facebook page <-<-

This in many ways was one of my toughest challenges I have ever put my body through.  It was so tough because of the grind of 100 consecutive days.  It didn’t matter if I was traveling, working 18 hours, had a nagging injury, or so on, I had to get it done. No excuses, I did it. Why… Because I try my best to live up to my word and my commitment, both to myself and to you.  I publicly put it out there to the world, which in turn gave me extra support and accountability.

On day 94, it was 9:30 at night and I was completely exhausted.  I hadn’t done any pullups and had no desire to do so.  Instead, I decided to take a 2 hour nap on the couch and wake up at 11:30 pm and do my 100.

I have had many trainers, clients and friends ask me how it was.  I will give you a few pros and cons.

  1. My lats (major pullup muscles) became severely overtrained starting around day 25 and never really recovered.  It became nearly impossible for me to raise my arms completely up because it felt like they were going to rip from the bone.  The first 10 pullups each day made me want to cry it hurt so bad.  This is why we trainers say don’t lift similar muscle groups on consecutive days.
  2. The daily grind of the challenge decreased my desire to lift and workout the rest of my body with weights.  I am embarrassed to admit it, but I hardly lifted during the three months.  I have trained hard in stair training and biking though during this time.
  3. I lost the joy of pullups because it became a chore and a burden.

2015-07-06_1149Pros:

  1. When starting the challenge I could do 14 pullups in a row at 190 lbs and 6’5.  I can now do 29 straight pullups at the age of 32.  A couple years ago, I trained hard in pullups and did 21, so I am blowing those numbers out of the water.
  2. It forced me to be extremely disciplined each day regarding the pullups.  I would have to seek it out and be very intentional.  It became a non-negotiable in my life to go to bed having done 100 pushups.  It became part of who I am.
  3. My back, biceps and grip are extremely strong right now, and despite the fact that I didn’t lift much else my body looks very fit and strong.

This experience has given me confidence that I can set a seemingly overwhelming goal for myself and achieve it.

People are asking me if I will continue doing a 100 pullups per day.  Definitely not, but I also don’t want to stop the momentum I have gained.  One idea I have is committing another 100 days to 150 pullups/day 3X per week.  This would allow me to progress, but have those important days of rest.  Not sure if I am going to do this yet, I look forward to getting back into a more normal weight training routine again.

Thanks for all your support, I couldn’t have done this without you.  During the last month, I wouldn’t start my pullups until 9 pm, because I dreaded it, but with your help I didn’t give in.

I want to thank my client Mary, for sending me this video you are about to watch.  I think it is the most inspirational video I have seen this year. Maybe it is because of her age, or her struggles with depression, acid reflux, panic attacks, and anxiety, or maybe it is because of how she is making a difference in her community.

Carve 8 minutes out of your busy life to watch this.

At the very least, your soul will be warmed and you will smile.  This might be, though, the moment where you make a decision that will alter the future decades of your life for the better.

It might be the day you commit to starting or restarting your journey to having the healthiest and fittest body possible.  Not so that you can walk on stage in a bikini, but a body that can serve you for the rest of your life.

I was wrong.

This weekend, I am headed to Phoenix, AZ for the Function Aging Institute.  A fitness conference bringing the brightest minds in the world together who look to serve those 55 years old and above. It happens to land on my birthday (June 13th), but spending my birthday learning practical ways to help you improve the quality of your life is a pretty awesome way to spend a birthday if you ask me. I turn 32, and it has given me an opportunity to reflect back on the past 10 or so years of my personal workouts and the workouts I provide to my clients.
 
Back in my early 20s I would consider my workouts to be “bodybuilder” type workouts (although I never achieved massive muscle gains).  I would lift as heavy of weights as possible for 8-12 reps, 2-3 sets, most days of the week breaking my body up into “parts” and avoiding cardio like it was a toxic virus. While there was nothing inherently wrong with this type of training (and a lot of things right) it didn’t give me the same results as I am seeing now.
 
Call me old, but I am now more focused on WHAT I can do, rather than HOW I look. Don’t get me wrong, I still have some vanity and want to keep a 6 pack as long as I can, but HOW I feel and HOW I MOVE has become much more important.
 
I came across an old pic from 10 years ago (left) and a pic that was taken last week (right).

You can see in the pic from 10 years ago, I was a little more muscular, definitely had a bigger chest, and maybe a bit bigger arms. But looking back now, I wouldn’t consider myself to have been in great shape.  I could hardly run more than a couple blocks, my cardio was so bad, my legs were very weak (I skipped leg days), and my balance and agility weren’t great.
 
Fast forward 10 years, and I can MOVE better and FEEL so much better.  My joints don’t hurt anymore, I have much better endurance, and my resting heart rate is lower.  I am better at sports then when I was in high school and college, and I am more well rounded. I certainly can’t bench press as much as I use to, but I realized unless I am crushed under a car or trying to show off and do push ups with a girl on my back, it doesn’t really matter whether I bench press 200 or 300 lbs.
 
Why am I sharing all of this with you?
 
I encourage you to shift your focus from what your body looks like, to how it feels and moves.  Our bodies are our most valuable vehicle. When we move it the right way (exercise), and fuel it with the right foods, it will take us to amazing places and not limit us in the future.

I’m still blown away by your great questions, comments, etc. I thought I’d take a minute to answer some of the most common questions I’ve been getting.

When will the live coaching calls start?

The live coaching group will meet on Tuesdays, starting on May 19.  Emily will reach out to participants to set a time for the calls that works for the greatest number of people.

What will the coaching be like and how will it help me succeed?

We are purposely limiting the size of this coaching group so that Emily can give individual attention to everyone who signs up.  She will be asking you about your goals for the program and how she can best help you, so it may look a little different for everyone.

At a minimum, there will be weekly group calls, regular email/text check-ins, food journal review, etc.  Our goal is to give you the tools and the accountability to help you really make the most of the program over the next 6 weeks and get on track for life.

I am very out of shape and nervous to try an exercise program. I have seen infomercials for workouts that seem really hard.  I am afraid of hurting myself.  Will this program work for someone who has considerable weight to lose and hasn’t exercised in over a decade?

Yes!  Having worked with so many people, we have perfected the art of creating workouts that are gentle enough for the beginner yet challenging enough for the avid exerciser.  The secret is in variable resistance, and exercise modification and progression.  We have people needing to lose 200 lbs doing the workouts.

What equipment will I need for the workouts?

Two workouts are body weight only.  The others only require a set of hand weights (8-15 lbs) and a stability ball (55cm-65cm).

5 Foot, Mother of Two Goes from 210 lbs to 166 lbs and still losing (winning)

Every story I hear from a client inspires me to push harder in my own workouts and in my own life.  I would like to introduce you to Mallory who has been at the Fit Moms Transformation Center for just over 3 months.

Don’t let her small stature fool you, she is a mom on a mission and it has been awesome to see her journey.  Check out her story below and then I will come back at the end with a couple observations.

Share a little bit about yourself and your background with your health and fitness.

IMG_6599 I’m a Pediatric RN, mommy and wife. I grew up in a large family on a small farm in Northern WI. Money was tight growing up and therefore our diet resembled my parents budget. My mom did her best to make healthy meals with what she had. We had a garden and raised our own beef. I learned that meals needed lots of meat and very little green stuff, as my dad referred to it as “cow food” or “grass”. My mom always attempted to have a vegetable and/or fruit with every meal despite my fathers view point. After leaving the farm I married my high school sweetheart Nick and we brought two beautiful boys into the world. He has loved me at my heaviest and through this whole health journey. 

I was moderately active all the way through high school but always struggled with keeping weight off. At 17 I became the manager at a fast food restaurant and increased my poor eating habits. After high school I became lazy, it was easier to eat out then cook. Also whenever I was stressed or upset I found comfort in food. The stress of nursing school and the birth of my first son Gavin brought me to the heaviest, and it was eye opening. I was sitting at 210lbs on my 5ft frame. While looking at our beautiful family picture I only felt shame. In the summer of 2012 after graduating from nursing school I decided it was time to lose the weight.

My husband would ask to do active things and I would make excuses, I didn’t want to be the fat girl with the good looking guy. Physically active things always seemed to come easy to him and I often felt left behind. I made my first goal to just keep up with him. If he was walking fast into a store instead of saying slow down, I tried to keep his pace. This was not an easy feet! I then learned of Couch to 5k and surprised Nick by telling him I downloaded the app and was going to run a 5k. He was supportive right away and joined me. We ran our first 5K spring 2013! I got down to 170lbs by the end of the summer and also found out I was pregnant with my second son Corbin. I gained back most the weight while pregnant and at six months postpartum had made it to 180lbs only to gain back 10bs while breastfeeding. That’s when I heard of Dustin’s Santa Slim Down/Pay to lose challenge, I watched the video about the challenge multiple times and finally built up the courage to tell Nick that I was going to join a community that I had never heard of, drop $150 and go to boot camp. At first he seemed more skeptical then me, but quickly became the supportive husband he has always been. I started the challenge November 30, 2014 weighing 190lbs. And now on March 9, 2015, 100 days later, I am down to 166lbs! 

Where was your life before being introduced to my program?

I had hit a wall and was becoming more frustrated with my weight. I looked back on the summer of 2013 and wondered if I’d ever be able to do it all over again. I honestly was feeling depressed. I had seen many mothers lose the weight after having a baby with just breastfeeding. I didn’t lose, I gained! It is crazy how intensely hungry you are while breastfeeding. 

How did you hear about my program?

 I heard about Dustin’s program through a Facebook post on the No Excuse Mom’s Madison’s page.

As you were in the program what were you enjoying?  What were some of the challenges you had to overcome?

I love the community. All of the people I have met and worked out with are encouraging, helpful and friendly. IMG_6561Dustin and the trainers are excellent, I have never felt as if I didn’t belong there. The workouts are intense but the feeling of achievement at the end is worth the burning muscles. At first I had to overcome the little voice in my head telling me I was crazy. On day two when I couldn’t sit on the toilet or walk stairs I was convinced this was the biggest mistake ever… Ouch! But the pain went away and only strength remained, strength I honestly thought I never would have. I can do a real push up now and I actually don’t dread burpees.

How is your life different now than it was before being introduced to my program?

I have energy and I feel good in my body! I have found myself holding my head higher. My diet has changed and so has my families. We buy fruit and veggies in bulk and limit sweets and added sugars. I’ve been cooking more meals at home and packing my lunch for work so I know what I’m eating.

How has the reaction been with your friends and family.  Do they treat you differently?  Do they try to sabotage your results? How have you handled all of that?

My family and friends have commented on my weight loss and most of it has been positive. I have never taken compliments well so it’s something I struggle with. My family does point out when I eat an unhealthy snack but I know that having a cookie on occasion is not going to ruin what I have accomplished. 

What is your eating like now?  

The movie Fed Up was an absolute eye opener, I watched it with my husband during the challenge. Within a week we got a babysitter and went on a shopping mission to change the food we keep in our home. We read labels and discussed our overall goal for not only our health, but the health of our boys. We aimed to buy more fresh produce and limit all added sugar. This has been a huge positive change for my family. It has been great having my husband and I on the same page about what we are feeding our family. 

A typical day for me:

  • 2 eggs poached
  • Greek yogurt
  • Banana or cup of berries
  • Water

Lunch:

  • Lean turkey breast
  • Colby jack cheese slice
  • Cut veggies with dill dip
  • Apple
  • Skinny pop
  • Water with lemon

Dinner:

  • Sautéed green beans and mushrooms
  • Chicken breast
  • Quinoa
  • Water

Snacks:

  • Dried apple slices
  • Fresh fruit
  • Almonds with raisins and a table spoon of dark chocolate chips
  • Water

Lastly your best friend comes up to you and is considering joining the program you were just on.  What would you say to them?

I think the coolest part of her story was the support and excitement her husband had as she began her journey.  Spousal support is the most powerful support you can get, and Mallory is blessed to have it.

Like just about everyone who starts one of our programs the first week is brutal and your muscles hurt to the touch, but let Mallory remind you it is only a temporary pain and will only last about a week.

Lastly, even though she was bigger starting out, she felt comfortable, safe, and not judged.  This is radically different than many places she could have gone to start her journey and what makes the TC and the Fit Moms for Life worldwide community so special.  Women supporting each other.

My Biggest Pet Peeve!

Who you are today is what you will become tomorrow.
 
I was recently asked what are my three biggest pet peeves. One of them is making excuses and not taking responsibility and action for the current situation you are in and doing NOTHING about it but complain. You don’t like your current amount of energy you have? What are you doing TODAY to change that? Not a week or a month from now TODAY.
 
If increased energy is your goal, here is what I would start doing TODAY to change that:
 
-Make a plan to get at least 7 hours of sleep.
-Eliminate all caffeine
-Drink 3 quarts or more of water
-Reduce or eliminate processed carbs and added sugar
-Increase your fat and protein content to minimize blood sugar levels
-Exercise vigorously for at least 30 minutes each day.
 
If you make these changes, your life will forever be changed and your energy levels will be at a place you didn’t think was possible. It starts TODAY! Don’t wait until tomorrow to start to get the results you deserve. Life is too short to procrastinate.
