I’d like to share an e-mail I recently received. I’m not sharing this as a pitch for my programs, but more so to give hope to anyone who has battled cancer, or knows someone who has (which is everyone). I have five clients now that are either battling or are in the recovery phase of cancer.
I have been thinking about writing you this letter for some time. My name is Beth Evans. I am a mother of 4, a physician, and now a breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year at the age of 40. My kids are only 8, 8, 5, and 3 years old. I had a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction in January and went through chemo from February through June. This is how I “met” you.
I have never been obese but I definitely have been overweight since having all those kids. I got pregnant with twins in my last year of residency which was an already very stressful time in my life. I did 2 residencies at the same time (internal medicine and pediatrics). I don’t think I slept for 6 years!!! Anyway back to my story. I was in okay shape (now I realize that I was so not in good shape at all but at the time I thought it was pretty good). My husband and I moved to Virginia and I started back to work part time at a community health center. I was busy between the kids and work. Then November of last year I felt a lump, had a biopsy and was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had the surgery and chemo and I remember sitting in the chemo chair in early June feeling the lowest I have ever felt.
I was weak, depressed, and much heavier (due to all the steroids I was given to help with the side effects of chemo). So I sat in the chair getting my last treatment with chemo and googled “energy for moms”. Your book came up and I read it. I tore through it because it was right on. The idea that you can only make a meaningful change when the situation you are in now is harder than making that change. I got it and I changed.
I always ate healthy so the diet changes were not to dramatic for me. I ordered your fit mom for life DVDs and I purchased the weights. I could not even carry the 20 lbs weights to the car at that time. I definitely was afraid. I have never lifted weights and I did not want to hurt myself. Plus I was so so weak. I felt like an 85 year old woman in a bald 40 year old body. I had worries but I so did not want to stay in that place so I started to do your videos.
I cried the first time through video number 1. I was shocked at how weak I was. But I continued and have been doing your program consistently for 4 months. I do it 3 to 4 times a week and am just finishing video number 4. I have lost 26 lbs, met all my goals,and feel awesome. I mean I FEEL GREAT!!!! I know for a lot of people it is about how they look but for me the biggest change is how I feel. I feel strong and I am taking my life back. I am taking back what cancer almost took from me. I am a great mother and a dedicated doctor. I work hard but I can play hard now also. I can play freeze tag and chase, I can jump on the trampoline without peeing, and I have energy. Everything you promised.
I know I have ways to go. I still would like to lose 20 lbs and do more push ups and always live healthier but it is a start.
I guess I am writing to you to let you know that you did this for me. You helped me in a very bad time in my life and are making a big difference despite the fact that I have never met you. Thank you for your hard work and keep moving forward.
I am so appreciative that Beth shared her touching story with me. I’d like to pull out some lessons we all can apply to our own lives.
#1 We need to be convinced that our current state is more painful than what it will take to change… hopefully it won’t take months of chemo to figure that out.
#2 Set backs and challenges in life can be overcome with will and determination.
#3 Life won’t give us more than we can handle. I can’t imagine going through residency, having twins, having more kids, getting cancer and having to deal with the affects of chemo while maintaining a doctor type schedule. This is just one of many stories that proves the human will is very powerful.
#4 Strength training does FAR more than just fat loss. It makes us FEEL strong, which if you haven’t experienced, is extremely empowering.
#5 There are levels of fitness many people don’t even know exist. Beth thought she was in good shape before kids. When we haven’t trained in certain ways our level of what is “good” becomes relative. As I become wiser and train harder, I am finding new ways to become more fit, much stronger, and better at what I do.
#6 It is OK to feel fear, but working through fear is even more transforming. Beth was scared to start the program as she struggled to carry her 20 lb weights to the car.
#7 Life isn’t about how much we weigh, how much weight we lose, or what size clothes we wear. It is about being able to play on a trampoline without peeing, it is about being able to hike with strength and energy, and most importantly it is about being able to be active with family and friends.
#8 Google rocks! I am so grateful Google put my book in front of Beth’s eyes as she sat in that chair at her lowest low.
