I would like to share with you a story of a woman who was tired, depressed, had food addictions, bad menopause reactions and a death of a child. Anyone of these challenges is tough to overcome, but the deck of cards was certainly stacked against her. Fortunately she was ready for a change and was determined to take back her life. Also fortunately, she happened to find the Fit Moms For Life DVD program and was about to start the transformation of her life!
Here is her story in her own words…
I am 50 years old and have been battling my weight and unhealthy eating since I had kids who are 29 and 26. Our first child died right after birth (he would have been 30 this year) and that took an emotional toll on me and I began using food for comfort. Even though I have never been very overweight my health was affected by my extra 20 pounds and very bad eating habits.
Using food as a stress reliever was causing a lot of problems both emotionally and physically. I wouldn’t just over eat but would binge eat at times. Food was controlling me. I heard once that you can tell if you have a food problem if you live to eat and not eat to live. Wow, that was me. I planned what I was going to eat next before I was done with what was in front of me. This addiction to food lead me to be depressed, which lead me to eat more, then more depression, a vicious circle.
My health was affected in many ways. I had asthma and in my early 30’s I dealt with depression. I was on depression medication and I used a daily inhaler for asthma, an emergency inhaler (used daily as well) and kept a nebulizer on hand for serious problems. Plus I usually would end up in the ER once a year. I couldn’t run and spent a lot of time watching TV as my energy level was non-existent. I was crabby and didn’t want to be around anyone, which is not normal for me. In my 40’s I started dealing with menopause which was horrible. The mood swings, hot flashes and food cravings were horrible.
I tried so many diets and exercise programs and they would work for a while and I would lose the weight but pretty soon I would give in to temptation and I would put the weight back on. Then then the circle would continue. I know I hit rock bottom a few times but never was able to stay off bottom. My emotions seemed to always win.
My daughter in law got involved in Herbalife which is a supplement program that promotes healthy eating using high protein shakes along with herbal supplements. She was doing a 6 week weight loss challenge in which you had a weekly weigh in and a meeting where you would discuss your week, and learn healthy eating habits. It was working for her and she would tell me how great she felt. I really believe in women supporting women so I thought I’d give it a try.
I was looking for different ways to work out and had heard about interval training and wanted to give it a try so I Googled it and guess who popped up? Yup, you and Fit Mom’s For Life. I ordered your 12 DVD series and began my real life change. I love the short but intense workouts, and the fact the women are REAL. Not actors. They sometimes struggled or goofed up which made me feel good when I struggled with a move. I got into a routine where I worked out with you every other day and on the off days I would run or walk. Normally run. My favorite is the weight lifting that has been huge for me. I feel great after my workout and I get comments from people all the time about how “buff” I am. My husband loves the definition in my arms, which is pretty cool!
I began doing 5k runs just for fun but now have gotten competitive. I recently ran a mud run and a Warrior Dash, which are 5k’s through an obstacle course with lots of mud. I took second place in my age category in the Warrior Dash. I just, last night, signed up for a Tough Mudder. That is a 10 mile obstacle run. Well you know what that is. The coolest part of the running is I run with my son, his wife, her brother and his girlfriend (who are both personal trainers). My grandkids both run in the kids 1k’s and we have a blast. I haven’t got my husband into it yet but maybe someday. It’s a real family thing!
It’s been 1 ½ years since my real transformation began. My asthma shows very rarely and I am not depressed anymore. My menopause symptoms are manageable and I feel better than I ever have. I’m not going to tell you everything is perfect. I still have times where I crave BAD food and a lot of it. But I know that I can give in once in a while because I have the tools to work it off and get back on track.
