This post is made by Kim, one of Dustin’s contributors.
A while back, Dustin made a pretty powerful post, and my favorite part of it was this paragraph:
“Each of you reading this have a beautiful gift of leadership, and have the ability and responsibility to be the best for your family, friends, coworkers, and strangers. You are capable of great things. You have the responsibility to teach others the truth regarding getting healthier, because the last I checked our world is getting sicker and sicker.”
I really thought about the reasons why we do (and should) volunteer to make a difference in our communities. Like Dustin said, our world is getting sicker. The United States spends more than any other country on health care, yet we are one of the sickest. We aren’t preventing disease we are treating it. We can change this, one person, one community at a time by passing on the education we have and by motivating others to get healthy.
I challenge you to start a Fit Moms For Life group in your community, or find an afternoon a couple times a month to work with children after school to teach them about nutrition and the importance of exercise, or start a wellness group at your church, … It doesn’t matter what you do, just take the knowledge and motivation that you get from Bootcamps, FMFL dvds, Tracie Hittman’s nutrition, etc and pay it forward. It’s the season of giving, so give a little back and make a change.
I heard this song, and I thought it was fitting for the topic of volunteering. What we do and who we are shouldn’t be about making a buck off of someone else. Don’t do it for recognition or fame, do it to better yourself and your families and you’ll end up profitting in more ways than you know!
